There are only two of us in our house. We split loaves of bread into two or three before freezing. That way we only ever defrost a little bread and it never spoils. Our local Lidl gives away out-of-date bread on Tuesdays and we often get that for the freezer.

At Morrisons supermarkets you pay for parking - get a voucher & can redeem it in store against your shop. It's amazing how many people throw these vouchers down - I just happen to pick them up & use one in the cafe & others at till - split between me & other half. Only use one each person at a time.
I know it sounds desperately mean, but it's the same as picking up £1 coins - I feel no shame.

We buy a tray of minced beef from the supermarket. Then we split it into three bags before freezing. We then add chopped mushroom or onion to each bag to bulk out the mince. A tray that used to do two meals now does three!

    Hiya
I have done this but now also add same quantity of soya dried protien stuff to each bag of mince I make up - doubles the quantity of mince you have with no one in this house telling the difference - (not even me TBH) - bag of TVP soya mince is 99p. I have given up soaking it seperately I am now just popping it in to cook with the mince as I brown it.

    Love this thread xx

  • I'm not sure if this as already been said as I'm not quite fininshed reading the whole thread yet but my tip is to save the fluff from the tumble dryer in an empty toilet roll and to use as a fire lighter when having a bbq.

  • My OH used to be a terrible brand snob.
If I served baked beans with a meal I noticed he would glance round the kitchen worktops as he sat down at the table, and if he spied a cheapo beans tin he'd take a couple of mouthfulls then say the beans tasted horrible "they aren't Heinz" and leave them!
So I kept the last heinz beans can I ever bought, carefully washed it out, and I kept it hidden at the back of the cupboard...then when we had beans (Aldi ones, usually) I'd put the 'decoy' out on the worktop where I knew he'd see it, and Hey Presto! he'd think he was eating Heinz and he was one happy bunny.

Sixteen years later I'm glad to say he's got over his brand snobbery and he now eats Aldi without any fuss! However, I NEVER confess my crafty tricks because it only takes one bad experience and these old brand snobs can easily fall off the wagon!;)

I love this forum...at last I've found others who dont get sucked in by all the nonsense in the world!

That`ll be the ones that come out in a hole instead then ? (I`m old too)

I bought a pair for Dd at the weekend, as she always manages to ladder tights first time on, and she didn`t believe me when I said I used to wear them when I was her age - (`course I was born this age) :rotfl:

I stumbled upon this thread and I am amazed. What a wonderful collection of tips :j. It will take me a while to read through them all but Im relishing it. I am a converted money saver :j

Anyway, I have a couple of questions....

where white vinegar is referred to, do you mean "white wine vinegar" as thats all thats come up on tesco home delivery.

I havent found borax  but did pick up some soda crystals.

My washing machine drawer is blocked (the fabric conditioner goes but is replaced with water?) Ive seen mention of using white vinegar and essential oil as a replacement for standard fabric conditioner)? again is that white wine vinegar and how much do i put in ? any tips on how to clean it? declug it?

Im trying the bicarb in an egg cup at bottom of fridge tip as my fridge is a bit pongy. Do i remember correctly that i can clean with it as well? and how?

My sink in my kitchen is not blocked but well you know, not great - what is the best solution for this?

What can I use my soda crystals for??

Im sorry if this is posted on the wrong thread but I find the forum quite confusing sometimes......

is there a thread listing like the product i.e. soda crystals and listing recipes? i.e how to clean with it?

Hello Flat Eric:j, I will try and answer your questions!

!. Not the white wine vinegar - that is way too expensive to use for cleaning or fabric softener! Just the normal white vinegar will do - I buy mine at a chinese supermarket and get 5L for around £2.49 but I have used the normal brown vinegar in a pinch that worked ok too.

2 Bicarb of soda is a good odour absorbor for your fridge and to clean with it I normally would just sprinkle some onto a damp cloth or dip a damp cloth into a pot of it. It is not normally something I would use for big cleaning jobs but for small things that need a delicate and soft abrasive it would be fine.

    3. I have never been able to buy Borax in this country either but washing soda is the closest alternative. Put a big handful of washing soda crystals in the bottom of your sink (right over that drain) and pour a kettle of boiling water over them, sink will become unplugged the first time you do this with a little luck - if not repeat the process, do the same thing with your blocked drawer in your washing machine, soda crystals and boiling water. I would then carry on and run my machine through a hot wash as the soda crystals will help get rid of all the hard water deposits.

    4. Vinegar for fabric softener - I just add a couple of tablespoons instead of fabric softener into the machine. I don't bother with the essential oils, your clothes will not smell of vinegar once they are dried (promise!) so it is an unnecessary expense!:D

    Enjoy!
    Marion
ps - did I mention you can normally clear out a blocked toilet with a whole box of soda crystals dissolved into a bucket of boiling water - just pour it down in one go!

I always redeem mine, but last week, just as I was peeling the backing off to stick one half to the windscreen, along came a huge gust of wind and blew the other (redeemable) half out of my hand. I chased the b*** thing half way round the car-park until it gusted up and over the roof somewhere

I wonder if mine was one of the ones you found :rotfl:

However, in true MSE style, I shopped then nipped back into the store with the other (sticky) half and got my money back from the lady on the kiosk :T
I let my mind wander and it never came back!
