  • I cycle regularly for exercise but only have one set of cycling shorts. given they need to be washed after every time I take them into the shower with me. a good swish round in the soapy water around my feet freshens them a treat. better than putting the washing machine on every time. I often do the same with swimming kit, not dirty as such, but need to remove the chlorine

    This may be gross but...

Most expensive foot creams have uric acid in them to break down hard skin.

Doing a no1 in the shower has the same effect (subject to being the correct sex :P)

Just make sure you have a good wash afterwards.

  • :D At least it would be your own. I worked with a lady(late 50's in age) and if she got soaked coming into work, she would take off her underwear and dry them on the radiator in the loos:eek: . Nan's knickers left a lot to be desired.:rotfl:

Ive been reading about bulking out stews and mince etc with lentil, veggies....... Im now looking for honest opinions on how these taste, I dont want to spoil a good lump of stew in the slow cooker without knowing how it turns out - thanks !
Lots of people swear by lentils or oats but they just don't cut it for me. I eke out the stew with an extra carrot (or three depending on size), onion or two, also you can add doughballs, mmmmm soak up the gravy and taste yum! Or you can keep the leftovers and add peppers/courgettes etc and make it into a stroganoff or suchlike. Peas added in also works well too. I tend to use butcher meat (and not supermarket value crud) and find that if the meat has a good flavour (some cheaper cuts have loads of flavour, just need cooking longer) then it can take a good lot of veggies with it, long as you season well. I find SC stews lovely, although veg can take longer than meat in there, so cut the veggies small and also place near the bottom.

You can also bulk them out with porridge oats and nobody would be any the wiser, or I sometimes just add a handful of brown rice

This must be the ultimate in meanness but I've just saved today's potato peelings, sprayed them with "One Calorie" pump oil and put them in the oven to roast while I was cooking a flan.
Result: a few free crisps to nibble which cost nothing so that's one lot of VAT on a packet of snacks that the Chancellor won't be getting!
My OH now thinks I've completely lost the plot. He's accusing me of causing the recession single handed:rotfl:

I done this the other day but dropped them into the deep fat fryer instead...Took them out and added salt and vinegar while still moist then when they dried out gorgeous crisps

if you have an old roof SLATE not tile hanging around not in use then take a hammer to it carefully but really powder it up...Then you will have the exact same thing as baby powder...!!!

We only fill the dishwasher when we've run out of implements to use - always full and used much less often. Also only use half or even a quarter of a tablet and turn off at the drying stage. (I know lots of people here probably won't agree with diswashers but if you do then I reckon we have saved a lot doing the above).

Similarly with washing machine - don't wash until almost run out of things to wear and only use half or quarter the recomended powder or tabs. Saves a fortune on washing childrens stuff.

This tip has been posted a lot and I still don't understand why people do it

The whole point of a tablet is that it is pre-measured out in the dose the manufacturers recommend, so it saves time to use. That's why they can charge so much more for it. If you are only going to use half or a quarter of the recommended dose why not just buy loose powder or liquid and measure out less of it? The loose powder is far far cheaper than the tablets, and its much easier just to pour a bit less in the dispenser than it is to wrestle with a knife and a hard tablet, trying to cut it into bit!

BTW- my last dishwasher didn't work properly with reduced doses, though my current one does. I think it depends both on the make of your machine (maybe cycle length?) and the hardness of your water as to whether this tip works for you.
