Sneaky ways to save the pennies
Comments
-
This isn't so much a sneaky way of saving pennies but saving time (and the hassle of using cooking oil too). If you want quick poppadums, instead of deep frying them, pop them in the microwave for about 60 seconds, when they will completely cook. They will curl up to be cup-shaped, but if you just want to break them up and eat them that doesn't really matter. You could even use them like this as fancy little baskets for serving other things in but they will go soggy if you put anything too moist in.1

I also make chapattis, altho admitedly they're never as good as restaurant ones or those made by an Indian woman, lol. They are just water/yogurt and flower mixed up and kneeded into balls and then rolled flat, then heated in a saucepan for a couple of minutes.
Hi tsharp, i hope you don't think i'm being picky but you shouldn't put yogurt in your chappati dough, it should just be chapatti flour and water...take it from a bona fide Indian Woman!0 -

Thinking about it, I've never used yogurt in chapattis, altho have used some cream in with the water. A quick google search revealed that some recipes do use yogurt and cream though...
My chapattis are too crispy if i'm honest, and the dough would never stand up to the flinging from hand to hand that i've seen done before!"I have enough money to last me the rest of my life, unless I buy something."0 -
Hi people I'm looking for a little advice, yesterday I started my mince, veg, lentils and oats in the slow cooker its delicious except the lentils which are still a bit crunchy, will they ever soften or have I done something wrong, I didn't soak them as I read there is no need when using the slow cooker.
Thanks in advance x
I had exactly the same problem, Phatmouse. Next time I am going to try a combination of more liquid and a longer cooking time (say 1 extra hour on medium), which should hopefully sort it. If I find there's too much liquid at the end, I'll bung in some cornflour or something similar to thicken it up, and whack the setting up to high for the last part of cooking.
I like the idea of using lentils, oatmeal, grated carrot etc to bulk out the meals - I reckon I got 1-2 extra servings this way. So I'm keen to get it right, especially as it all adds extra nutrients (as well as to mention taste!)Life is not a dress rehearsal.0 -
Great thread, I spend hours in here....thanks for all the great tips.
I only have one at the moment...
If you use conditioner on your hair you can make it go twice as far if, after you've shampooed and rinsed your hair, you towel dry it, then apply the conditioner. You will only need to use half as much conditioner as you usually do, as when you apply conditioner to soaking wet hair, you are diluting it.:)0 -
Still reading this thread, isn't it addictive?
I've got a plastic "key" that I slot onto the end of toothpaste tubes and roll down, squeezing every last bit out to the bottom, then when I think it's all gone I cut the end off and use the last bit for another week or so.
Also, as I have long hair it can be a pain to wash every day, so on the days I don't need to go out, I tie it in a bunch and just wash the roots with the teeniest bit of shampoo, stops me feeling like a scrag if I open the door to the postie.
I have started re-using the teabags for a second time, but only in my tea, as DH likes his strong and would notice.
For the first time I have grown my own tomatoes this year and was very pleased with them :j . They tasted like tomatoes used to when I was a child.
I also save christmas paper from presents and give this to Father Christmas to wrap the stocking presents for the following year. Cards get chopped up and used as gift tags (some have even been used about 3 years in a row...)
