Sneaky ways to save the pennies

That's be worry too... instead we buy wine in France when possible, well MrEL's mum does. £1 a bottle, and 5 litre cubes for around £4.80... of the actual glass bottles we tried 4 varieties (to test several you understand
). Only one of them gave me a huge headache next day (after 2 glasses - must have a nasty chemical
). Never buying that one again but the others were fine and one, I'd go so far as saying delicious! Makes it much more painful to then pay £4 when we run out... so we will be asking more favours of her in 2009!

If like me, you're a bugg3r for the odd glass or five of wine, I tend to stock up on various bottles that are on special at the major supermarkets, rather than purchasing at full price when needed. Most deals tend to be half price bottles, or 3 for £10, and so on and so forth.
This then works out to be about £3 a bottle.
Also, if you're quick... Nectar are offering a deal with Laithwaites where you can join the Nectar wine club for an introductory cost of £46.98 (£39.99 + £6.99 postage). For your payment, you will receive 15 decent bottles of wine (Red, white or mixed). This works out to be about £3.13 a bottle.
PLEASE REMEMBER, to cancel the subscription as you will be charged the usual rate thereafter for subsequent wine cases. (Usually once every 3 months).
And finally... Drink responsibly
if per chance to get to go to calais - they do blossom hill and gallo for 6 bottles for £9.90 - roughly £1.65 a bottle - could have kicked myself as id just filled up on an order from Mr T - still filled the car up though - nowadays you can take a car over for £50 i think, shared between a few it'd be much cheaper - i took a coach trip and alwayd have a lovely time, they even have a Mr T over there - can get clubcard points too!)

All the references we make to going for milk and buying a week's worth of shopping reminded me of one of my little ways to save...when I go to the supermarket round the corner for "just milk" or "just bread", I don't get a basket or trolley. That way, I can only carry the milk and possibly one other thing (usually a bottle of wine
), and as i'm too lazy to go back for a basket (unless there's a whoopsiefest going on), I don't impulse buy anything. Except the wine.

Hi, my first post so bear with me. :-)
Took a few days to read all the posts (70 pages)
To keep the heat in the living room & stop it escaping under the kitchen door in winter, I fold/roll up an old bath towel & lay it in front of the kitchen door as a draft excluder. Stamp it down a bit to reduce the risk of tripping over it. There you go, no drafts without buying a propper draft excluder. ;-pIt's better to be late in this world than early in the next! :A0 -

I ended up singing up for the milkman in the end. It sounds daft and expensive but it's saved me a world of cash.
It's 20p more for the 1l Goat's Milk and about 10p a pint more for the 1pt of semi-cow that I take every 3/4 days, but I have saved LOADS more by not going in to Waitrose (the only place on my way home that sold Goat's milk) and picking up a world of Whoopsies. It's sad that I dont get so many Whoopsies anymore, but as I happily do without them, I certainly can't have needed them!
I just pop in there for Whoopised meat every now and again when I fancy a treat or am running low on something. Waitrose are AWESOME for Whoopsies. I think my best ever was 1kg Lean Aberdeen Angus mince for £1.69p. Phwoargh! That made 6 meals!

I'm sorry I can't read all 70 pages just yet ... but I'm enjoying working through them.
I save grape bags and other small plastic bags and wash them out. Then they get used for taking lunches to work.
I also give foil a wipe over and re-use. I'm learning to do the same with non-stick baking paper since Tesco stopped selling it.0 -
I got home from work today to discover that MrEH had removed all the discarded wire bag ties from the bag I use to take my lunch to work....having stood and straightened them all out we now have another three weeks supply of them. Most will already have been used several times this way too. May not save much, but every little helps!
I know this has been mentioned before, but if someone gives you shower gel or bath creme that you'd not otherwise use, consider popping it into an old handwash bottle and using as handwash. Alternatively put the bottles aside for making up gift baskets at christmas/birthdays.

1. I put essential oil (lavender is lovely) on a piece of cotton wool in my vacuum cleaner above the filter, and the resulting smell round the house is great - especially if you have pets.
2. To overcome DDs putting piles of once-worn clothing in basket (their idea of tidying their rooms!) I 'persuaded' them to do their own ironing - amazing how the washing piles shrank! :rotfl:
Chris
i've got 3 girls that wear clothes for a few hours, without them knowing i check everything before washing it , if it's clean i just run the iron over it .
they have'nt noticed yet.
