Sneaky ways to save the pennies

I'ts Brantano that's just shut unfortunatly - I could usualy get something there at a decent price - I'd love to wear trendy heals but I'm 53 and have never really been a heel girl, a bit too late to start:rotfl:
Oh heck, I'm sorry to hear that your shop closed down - hope that isn't a sign of 'things to come' with Brantano. Maybe a shopping trip to stock up on size 9's is needed  .
Your bit about the trendy heels certainly rings tru with me. I'm 57 with dodgy knees and ankles - 3" heels are definiately out of the question for me. I'm bad enough in low heels and flats are even worse - I find that my calf muscles 'pull' and my arches ache with those. I loved the 60's 'mod' heels at the time.
What about the 'Shoe Tailor' - have you tried them?

shoefayre do size 9's and cheap too! Don't know if there trainers go up to 9, but there shoes and boots do.
Hope this helps

I expect someone has already posted this (unless I am the only one to do it....:o ) I do like my hot drinks and if I'm not careful the kettle can go on many many times each day. So if there's enough extra water in the kettle I usually pop it in a thermos and use it for the next cuppa (or two!)0

If you're a marmalade maker and like a really thick chunky marmalade, finely chop and freeze the skins from the oranges, lemons, grapefruits and limes you use in drinks and in the kitchen generally instead of throwing them into the compost bin. You can then add them to the marmalade mixture when you making it to add extra flavours or make it more chunky. You can also store these in a jar of sugar for adding to cake mixtures.0
I also have the problem of having size 9 feet - the one shop I could buy ladies shoes in my size has just closed and when they were open I had very little choice. When I was younger I could get away with wearing mens shoes or trainers all the time but I look a bit ridiculous now.
I have never owned a pair of ladies trainers in my life - though I don't think pink stripes are really me!!
Have you tried Evans (yes, the plus size shop) for shoes. They do them in up to a size 10 and they are also wide fitting, so I find I only need a 7 instead of my normal 8.
Clarks also do up to a 9, so it's worthwhile keeping an eye on their sales racks at the right time of year.
I know what you mean about men's trainers, much better on the feet!0 -

If you want to get into wearing flats - or at least shoes with a lower heel as flats are almost as bad as high heels (surprisingly) wear them around the house and then just for short trips out - gradually increasing the amount of time you spend in them. I had to give up wearing high heels following an accident, but the shoes that got me out of a wheelchair are MBT http://www.swissmasai.co.uk/Default.aspx?lang=en-GB They are certainly not cheap but I bought a pair over three years ago and I have seldom taken them off! They still show no signs of wear either. I've never known comfort like it!Some people hear voices, some see invisible people. Others have no imagination whatsoever

I like the idea of the thermos for leftover hot water. I need to find a way to get my FIL to do this - he's a lovely man, looks after my son two days a week, but he boils the kettle about three times an hour. Seriously. Really, really annoys me - he does drink a lot of tea but he also forgets he's boiled the kettle. And what I find really strange is that he doesn't seem to notice that reboiled water tastes pretty gross after a while, even though he's really fussy about teabag brands, how long it brews and when you put the milk in!0

on the big shoes issue, i am female and have size 11 feet.
Evans is the only place i can buy girls shoes, and i drop to their 10 in most of their styles. (Most people drop a shoe size in evans, in the larger sizes at least)
it's a bit of a pain, i cant always afford evans shoes - never their boots... BUT they do often have sales... and the good thing is that they often have quite a few 10s left - sometimes stored out back, once got about 5 pairs of shoes for under £25!On the up

I have size 9 feet, but find New Look size 8's are quite often big enough (although they do 9's too) and very cheap! We have a Stead and Simpson too, which I managed to get 3 pairs of shoes from for £12!
Next clearance shops do size 9's too, if you have one nearby, and if you have loads of money spare (!!!) Long Tall Sally go up to an 11, they have a website you can look at.0 -
This must be the ultimate in meanness but I've just saved today's potato peelings, sprayed them with "One Calorie" pump oil and put them in the oven to roast while I was cooking a flan.
Result: a few free crisps to nibble which cost nothing so that's one lot of VAT on a packet of snacks that the Chancellor won't be getting!
My OH now thinks I've completely lost the plot. He's accusing me of causing the recession single handed:rotfl:0
