Sneaky ways to save the pennies

Hi all,
What a fab thread - I have read from the beginning and made loads of notes - quite afew things I do already without thinking about ..lol
the only new one I can come up with - I sell on ebay and when I need wrapping material I go to asda and get the sheets of bubble wrap from the fruit boxes - the staff are glad to get rid of it - it saves them sorting it and it probably doesnt get recycled ( might be wrong - sorry Asda!!)

When we moved to Spain, I used the bubble wrap from the Asda apple and banana boxes for wrapping ornaments etc. The banana ones were bigger as 1 sheet was interleaved thro' 3 layers of fruit, I also used the expanded tubes the mangoes and pappayas were wrapped in.
Nowaday when we go on holiday I throw a couple of sheets of bubble wrap into the case, just in case we buy anything breakable when we're away0 -
I am a long time user of the remoska, pressure cooker and slow cooker and these have really been pressed into use as the prices rise. I am doing well at keeping fuel consuption down but found I was putting my little top oven on just to heat the plates.
I don't now, I put a little water between each plate and give them a burst in the microwave for a minute or two. Care needs to be taken getting them out though as the water is boiling hot. I just remove the whole lot with an oven cloth and tip them into the drainer and let them drain for a few seconds.

Hi everyone. I've recently used someone's (v.v.good!) idea on how to keep costs down on milk. I still live at home with parents, but as I do a lot of the food shopping I can get away with it. I buy semi-skimmed so bought a 6pint of semi-skimmed. When that goes down I buy a 4pint whole milk and top it up with water. Family can't tell the difference and we save a few pounds every week just on milk as we go through about 12pints a week.
But, i have noticed that in Asda they are selling 4pint milk for £1 (it is £1.44 in Tesco where I normally shop), so it is £1 for a 6pint milk in essence! Really cheap if youre a family with younger kids who just guzzle it down!Money Saved for a house deposit so far = July 2008 £3331.09, August £4396.40, September £5,048.37 (Target = £9,000 by July 2009) 56% there already!:j
If I have helped you in any way, please thank me!0 -
Sounds like an excellent way to stretch out a quantity of milk.
The nutrient content per amount would drop if diluted, but that would only be a problem if the milk was being relied on to supply certain nutrients in a diet (such as calcium).I have no signature.0 -
hi everyone this is my first post but this is such a great thread! I have gained some great ideas from this thread and thought that i would add some of my own.
I save the pennies quite literally by throwing any copper change into my money tin, its amazing how quickly it adds up!
A great way to save on cleaning appliances such as an electric whisk everytime you use it is to clean it then wrap it in a carrier bag so that it stays clean and dust free until next time you need to use it, just whip off the bag and its ready to go!
I often homebake biscuits and cakes as my partner spends a fortune on them otherwise and to save on energy costs I will prepare one batch, put it in the oven and then prepare the next dish so that when i take the first one out then the second one can go straight in. It also means that I can bake one or two days a week and have enough snacks to last a week or so.
Another moneysaving tip I have would be to use carrier bags as bins rather than buying bin liners, because they are given away free with most purchases they cost you nothing and because they fill up quicker than bin liners it means that you will put them in the outside bin quicker (preventing that inevitable "bin whiff" you get once a bin liner has been there for a few days). It also recycles the carriers bags which might otherwise be chucked away.
Apologies if these or anything similar have already been posted, and at the risk of sounding stupid, could someone please explain to me what the abbreviations "OH", "DD" etc mean please? *feels sheepish*0 -

thanks for that, I felt a bit silly asking but thanks for being so nice and letting me know!
I home cook a lot to save money and a website which is great for helping with recipes is https://www.videojug.com, it takes you through each step and every recipe I have made comes out brilliantly.
I think that this is a way to save money because you can plan in advance what you are going to cook and save money by buying exactly what you need for the recipe, I hope this helps some people. I know my OH loves them!0 -
hi everyone, just spent several nights going through this thread and it is really good, really enjoyed it. really liked the videojug link in the last post, just had a look at it, what a brilliant idea, will try and use that to make some menu plans for the next couple of months, really run out of ideas these days for cooking:j also going to try stardrops, never heard of them before....do use most of the things suggested on here. one of the main ones i am doing thse days is trying to get fuel usage by driving really carefully and increasing the number ofmiles i get per litre...will see how it goes.....keep the ideas coming they are really great....:j :j0
