Can you buy frozen concentrated orange juice in England,i,ve never seen it.Have seen it listed on a few American frugal sites

I grew up on the stuff! Other drinks/juices (like American lemonaide) were also available this way.

Thanks for that chicken liver pate recipe, weelz. Just what I was looking for. :D

I'm intrigued by the $45 emergency menu and have printed it off to ponder. May fancy trying this in part if not whole.

Honestly... it doesn't make sense to do this. Foods that are cheap in the US are not cheap over here, and vice versa. You can get inspiration from what she's doing, but I don't think it would be cheap to copy all her menus. You have to find the equivelent British foods.

Well, back to report that the nettle gnocchi was a resounding success! First time I've made gnocchi too so feeling quite proud of myself, especially at the thought of the nettles being from field to table on the same day :D We had it with a tomato sauce (whoopsied 10p can of tomatoes) and it was yummy. We've got loads left as well so I'm freezing them for at least another two meals :T

Lovin' the hair/no hair chat - my OH could do with some more but as he's still a young'un I guess there's time (no chance on the pigs blood concoction as he's a veggie!)

Oh,and despite the recipe asking for a bag of nettles, my half bag was way too many so I have some left over - think I'll try the pesto and maybe the curry if I have enough left, or make some tea :j

Right, this thread seems to move on very quickly.

We had a new recipe (well, insofaras I ever actually follow a recipe. The ingredients were more or less the same, just not in the right order same method etc.

    It was

Frijoles Refritas refried beans to the rest of us! The only brush I've had with these are the vile little cans of stuff from the supermarket. I think the ones we have had are 'discovery brand'. This recipe could be made cheaper by cooking yer own beans. I normally do, but was in a hurry today.

    1 can kidney beans
1 can big white cannellini beans
    3 cloves garlic
    2 biggish onions
olive oil (recipe said 3 oz margarine  )
    14oz can of tomatoes

I cooked the chopped onions in some olive oil, added garlic. Fried until soft. Added beans and bashed them around a bit to break them up. Then added tomatoes and cooked until it was desired consistency. Seasoning was salt, pepper and chillli powder/hot pepper sauce.

We had this with 1 avocado's worth of guacomole (with salt, pepper, garlic, pepper sauce, chopped onion, chopped tomato). On the table also HM fresh flour tortillas, grated mature cheddar cheese, some bits of salad (chopped lettuce mainly!). DS said he thought a bit of sour cream would be nice.

I haven't worked it out yet, but will later on. The essential elements... the beans and tortillas were really very inexpensive. THe bits and pieces to make it interesting you can vary according to what leftovers you have. I didn't eat all my chicken last night, so dh had some of that, but it was very nice veggie style.

DH sorted the beans, ds was griddling tortillas and I was rolling those and lobbing various ingredients into pots and pans!

The best thing is that they all really enjoyed this, so I suggested it as an outline for next Saturday when friends will be visiting and I always spend too much on stuff! Kids suggested other things and dd has written the list for me in Spanish!

    update on price.

    Onions 12p (300g@ 39p/kg)
    Can kid beans 15p
Can white beans 32p (guess you could use 2 cans kid beans!)
    Can tomatoes 20p
    plus garlic and olive oil?

Assuming 2 cans kid beans then, 62p plus oil and garlic.
Tortilla wraps come in at around 1 1/2p each. 12@ 1.5 is 18p.

That's 80p for refried beans and tortillas. SOme cheese grated.... I used some special offer a £2 pack of 400g .

The rest of this just depends on what salad and trimming you want to have with it.

    Hiya ISOM,

ceridwen, if I blogged, I guess I couldn't post all these recipes in it, cos now they belong to (peace be upon him...) Martin now, eh? Just a thought, interested in what you've picked up, as you've been here longer than me...;)

    Hi Weezl

The way I would interpret the "copyright" phrase thingie that has been put to the side is that our own "property" remains our own "property" and that what we would need to be concerned with is other peoples "property". To me - anything I myself have written was my own "property" in the first place and remains my own "property" - I retain ownership of my own "property" (even though I have shared it on the Boards). I would say this "copyright" bit is there - in common sense - to protect other people who have contributed from having their "property" taken withut their permission. With their "permission" - then, in commonsense, no problem.

From that - I would say commonsense dictates you can repeat your own contributions whenever and wherever you please (ie on your own blog). As regards other people who have made a contribution to this "thread" - then I would say you could put their comments/recipes as well if you like (PROVIDED you have their permission to do so). I cant see that there could be any problem - as long as you dont put someone else's comments and/or recipes without their permission.

I think it could be a good idea if other "posters" on Weezl's thread say/send P.M.'s to Weezl giving permission for their own recipes/comments to be put on any blog Weezl does (if they are agreeable to that as well).

I dont believe - from my estimation of Martin - that he would try to claim ownership of our "property". I would say he is a reasonable sort of guy from what I can see - and genuinely trying to help us sort out our money problems (of course hes made a lot of money in the process - oh well:D )

I think you are doing a more valuable job than you know in doing this thread - which is why I am hoping you start up a blog.

I see you as playing a very important part in helping us all adapt to the food price rises going on.:T

  • Just wanted to say this is a great thread, I enjoyed a lazy, rainy Sunday yesterday reading it. I want to reduce my monthly grocery spend from £400 to £300 (family of 6). So this is a great place for inspiration.
I am particularly interested in all the nutritional info you have researched, although I am not sure where to get magnesium now we live in a soft water area, still at least I haven't had to descale my kettle since I moved here.

    Evening all!

Gillybean, you're right, I'll need to come up with something for those folks in soft water areas before the challenge is through!

Just made a really nice green lentil and flat leaf parsley pistou for sarnies, as I got an enormous bunch of flat leaf parsley whoopsied to 5p yesterday.

    Good times.

Sig now looking very sorry indeed, but still reckon I can pull through.

internet research on omegas 3 and 6 is proving tough, but I'm determined to post something tonight, so watch this space. Thanks for the links ISOM.

    Love to all,
