Weezl74 - could I use a jar of artichoke hearts in oil instead of sun dried bread tomatoes in your your recipe? Been lurking in the cupboard for a while now.... Glad to hear the Wenallt is still looking beautiful - I was a Cardiff girl for a long time in my youth & go back every few years, but haven't been up there for ages.

hmmmn..... artichoke hearts in bread, I wonder if they might make it quite soggy?! Having not tried it I'd hate to give an opinion and ruin your bread!!! What about blitzing it for an artichoke pate for sandwiches? Maybe with some chickpeas for texture and nuttiness...;)

The wenallt is still truly lovely. Mr weezl proposed to me there, so I'm quite fond of the place.:o

Right, this thread seems to move on very quickly.

We had a new recipe (well, insofaras I ever actually follow a recipe. The ingredients were more or less the same, just not in the right order same method etc.

    It was

Frijoles Refritos refried beans to the rest of us! The only brush I've had with these are the vile little cans of stuff from the supermarket. I think the ones we have had are 'discovery brand'. This recipe could be made cheaper by cooking yer own beans. I normally do, but was in a hurry today.

    1 can kidney beans
1 can big white cannellini beans
    3 cloves garlic
    2 biggish onions
olive oil (recipe said 3 oz margarine  )
    14oz can of tomatoes

I cooked the chopped onions in some olive oil, added garlic. Fried until soft. Added beans and bashed them around a bit to break them up. Then added tomatoes and cooked until it was desired consistency. Seasoning was salt, pepper and chillli powder/hot pepper sauce.

We had this with 1 avocado's worth of guacomole (with salt, pepper, garlic, pepper sauce, chopped onion, chopped tomato). On the table also HM fresh flour tortillas, grated mature cheddar cheese, some bits of salad (chopped lettuce mainly!). DS said he thought a bit of sour cream would be nice.

I haven't worked it out yet, but will later on. The essential elements... the beans and tortillas were really very inexpensive. THe bits and pieces to make it interesting you can vary according to what leftovers you have. I didn't eat all my chicken last night, so dh had some of that, but it was very nice veggie style.

DH sorted the beans, ds was griddling tortillas and I was rolling those and lobbing various ingredients into pots and pans!

The best thing is that they all really enjoyed this, so I suggested it as an outline for next Saturday when friends will be visiting and I always spend too much on stuff! Kids suggested other things and dd has written the list for me in Spanish!

Mr Ivy has no hair on his chest at all (nor anywhere), as he has Alopecia Universalis. He sounds like the complete opposite of M.Weezl!

His tummy is a little well developed, he scoffed almost an avocado's worth of guacomole, I hardly got any..actually I left him in charge of seasoning it and it was a bit hot for me!

My brain's a bit addled too, I wasn't sure what you wanted a linky to, was it the April grocery challenge?

The wenallt is what we call the bit of woodland north of Rhiwbina, at the hairpin bend just before the traveller's rest on Caerphilly road, take a left there, follow road for about a mile, car park by the large grass field on your right, and it's the lovely woodland walks on your right. Watch out for horses! If all the nettles have gone, you know who's to blame!!

    Hiya ISOM,

Nettles are most similar I think to a spinachy taste, but slightly smokier, and very slightly less sweet. Not hugely flavoursome, so like most green leafy veg, except perhaps brassica family, pretty adaptable to what flavourings you put them with. The curry is certainly lovely, and bails's blue cheese gnocci sounds like it would work well too.

I wonder if any of our vegetarian pals could offer a lasagne made with spinach recipe, that we could swap for nettles....?

What's thornhill farm shop like for prices?

Sorry all for excessive amounts of Cardiff chat, we can start something else over on the Welsh board if you like!!

Got 490g pigs liver whoopsied to 38p on sat and have just cooked it up with 250 g value bacon bits an 6 large onions and some spices. Delish!!! And now I know I've got enough evening meals til end of June... Phew!

Purpleivy, mine will send some hair, and yours can send some belly. Fair deal?:rotfl:

Nutrition wise, I am still trying to work out omegas 6 and 3 and the best proportions to eat them in, but t'internet is not so forthcoming.

I'll spout forth when I've got some spoutings tho...

ceridwen, if I blogged, I guess I couldn't post all these recipes in it, cos now they belong to (peace be upon him...) Martin now, eh? Just a thought, interested in what you've picked up, as you've been here longer than me...;)

I'm sure pepys wont mind Cardiff chat! Thornhill farm shop isnt cheap but the meat is really yummy! I'd rather eat less & have nicer IYKWIM! Have to say I have omega oils in a tablet with a mulipvit! TMI re hairy chests etc!! lol!! Just out of interest why did you start the challenge - for challenge or necessity? Being a DFW means the less I pay out the more I pay off & will be DF quicker but think it will all be so ingrained by then that o/s & DFW will continue!! Plus I love the characters at the market etc!!

Weezl having read the so called healthy eating recipe suggestions I am amazed that the americans arent even fatter! It might just be me but I didnt think that the healthy eating recipes were that healthy

    Lesleyxx

I haven't looked at those recipes, so I don't know what you saw. But, I would guess that by "healthy" the diet aims to get adequate calories and nutrients. It's not about being "lean" if that makes any sense.
