For absolute simplicity, I like to have a couple of rice cakes with either jam or cheese triangle depending on whether I want sweet or savoury, I find they have a lovely satisfying crunch.

Good luck with the pregnancy foreversomeday :j .

Why is this ? I was never told to avoid peanuts whilst pregnant  I suppose it's my fault my daughter is allergic to them

How old is she Thrifty? It might have only been advised after you'd had her. I had DD 6 yrs ago and the list of things to avoid has grown and grown since. When i had DD i wasn't told about bagged salad, tuna, merengue (sp?) but they're all on the list i've got this time. I think its ok to be cautious but theres being careful and theres getting obsessed and worrying in case you eat something not right. I, for one still eat peanut butter, neither OH or I, our parents or brother and sister have a nut allergy or asthma (sp?) so i dont see the risk as being high for us according to what they say. I have also eaten prawns, fully cooked in a curry at home, wouldn't risk it in a resturant/take away though.

And, despite telling pregnant women to avoid nuts for the past few years there has actually been a rise instead of a decrease in nut allergies in children  Also that in places where nuts are a part of the child's diet from weaning there are far less children with nut allergies.

    Hi

I have been browsing round the forum looking for different snacks to start making, as I am soooo much better at keeping the cost of the main meals down now, I am realising it is the snacks that are costing me a fortune...cereal bars, crisps, biscuit bars etc...I have two boys, both as skinny as rakes yet eat loads, I feel awful saying no when they are asking for food as they really could do with a little extra weight, but I am struggling to keep up with it now the food prices are rising. to be honest I do give them a lot of toast and sandwiches etc, so this does help as I use the BM everyday.

I remember a cheese bread/sticks recipe, but can't find it, I have a feeling it may have been poted by mrsmcawber...anyone know where it is please. And any links to other nice treats tht I can make myself please.

    Mel x

Do you want recipes/ideas for cheap homemade sweet snacks or just savoury things or bread recipes?

due to new tyres/car tax/mot/insurance etc etc i am severly skint this month and literally have not been able to do any shopping at all unless absolutly neccissary we are living out of my store cupboard and freezer this month. My 15 year lad is complaining there are no snacks in the fridge and seems to be totally incapable of perish the thought actually expending some effort to make some proper food  (think kevin + perry:rotfl: )
i`d love some junk food type snacky recipes to keep him happy as the snacky food really does bump up your food bill and its just not good for the street cred to nip into the house for some stew  bloomin kids cost a fortune!!
proper prior planning prevents !!!!!! poor performance! :p
Only when the last tree has died and the last river been poisoned and the last fish been caught will we realise we cannot eat money

posted these a while ago and always popular in our house

    Rice krispie squares
100g (4oz) butter or hard margerine
    100g (4oz) marshmallows
    100g (4oz) toffees
    200g (7oz) rice krispies

Put the top 3 ingredients into a saucepan and heat gently till all melted, then let it bubble for a minute or 2

Take off heat and let it stand for a couple of mins.

Put rice krispies into a large bowl and pour over toffee mix or if you have a large saucepan you can just add the rice krispies to that.

If you feel you need a few more krispies then add them, i often don't weigh them i just add enough so there all coated.

Put into a 12x9in suitable tin/container and pat down with the back of a spoon without pinching any while doing it!

Try to leave to cool and cut into pieces to you liking.Me and my sister usually cut small ones and then eat at least 2 coz there only small!

My tips for this is, i prefer butter,be careful what marg you might use because of the water content in a lot of them can cause soggyness

Keep in a tin, don't put in fridge or it goes soggy

Once you've made this you will never buy it again.

I usually make double,it keeps well if it lasts that long.

I use tesco/asda basic value toffees in a bag

    Hope you like it
