    Mortgage-free Glee!
OH and I have been cutting down on crisps and have started making popcorn instead in the microwave. I buy it in kilo bags for just a few pence from the Indian grocers and it lasts ages.

I just melt a little butter and sugar (or you can use salt) in a heatproof bowl with a lid and then add the popcorn, ensure its well coated, then microwave for approximately 3 minutes (I stop it after 2 and shake the container).
:D Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!:D

Have you tried flavoured popped seeds? They're fab! Pumpkin are the best :D

To try them out - put a couple of tablespoons of pumpkin seeds in a small bowl, add a shake of chilli flakes & chilli powder (your choice how much) then coat with low salt soy sauce & mix together. (I sometimes add a shake of garlic salt too).

Leave for 5 /10 mins to soak up the flavours.

Spread thinly on a sheet of tin foil & grill on high heat. They'll start to give off steam & then pop. Keep an eye on them (they burn easily). Give them a stir on the sheet (the undersides will still be wet) & grill again to dry / pop.

Scrape them onto a plate to cool.

    Mmmm! Yumyumyum :D

A great alternative snack to crisps, and dirt cheap too!

Sunflower seeds also work but have a different popping time to pumpkin so do them separately to avoid burning half the batch!

    Enjoy!

I have been making my own crisps recently. Just slice up in food processor and throw in fryer. Yum yum (but not at all healthy I supose)

  • A tip I picked up from another post on here is to turn your potato peelings into crisps.

After peeling your spuds, pat dry your (clean) peelings, spread out on a baking tray, drizzle with oil and sprinkle on salt. Cook in the oven at about Gas 6 until nice and crisp ~20 minutes. Best if you cook then when you already have the oven on. They are very nice. Might not make many but if you already have the spud peelings and the oven going then it's easy enough and very MSE.

Flapjacks made from value oats can also be cheap and filling. Otherwise homemade pizza slices could be a good alternative?

OMG - the cheese and marmite twists sound amazing - can these be done if you don't have a BM?
It's nice to be nutty but's more important to be nice

Something I made the other day were Pizza Swirls, I made bread dough, rolled it out (after first rising) spread with tomato puree and added cheese and herbs, rolled up like swiss roll and cut into slices. A bit like savoury chelsea buns I suppose!. Will make again and add a few more bits, they went down well with DDs.

MrsM the cheese and marmite twists were fantastic....Although there must be knack to the twisting, mine were very funny looking. The kids and dh loved them.
How long will they last in an airtight container.

I will be getting marge, flour, etc so will try making fairy cakes tomorrow too, I have never made successful ones yet so this is going to be a challenge.

Going back to popcorn I didn't realise you coated the unpopped corn I always thought it was the other way round. How do you make decent popcorn?

    Quick/Easy Microwave Crisps

A few years back I made some microwave crisps... without using a recipe (as a non-cook this could have been a disaster).

All I did was: sliced potatoes REALLY thick.
Laid out the slices on a piece of kitchen roll (on a plate for stability)
    Tossed chilli powder over them.
Covered them with another sheet of paper.
Kept nuking them for 1-2 minutes at a time and moving/turning them until they looked right.

    They were great.

You can throw any flavours on you like (curry, salt, pepper, chilli, any spices)

Other ideas for snacks would be:
    - Mini Pizzas
    - Rock Buns
