I personnally advise against using these sites to text friends etc unless you want them to start  receiving junk mail by text.
Rememember. Everyone seems normal until you get to know them.
Never pass up an opportunity to go to the bathroom.
If you woke up breathing, congratulations! You get another chance. And finally, be really nice to your family and friends; you never know
when, You might need them to empty your bedpan.
  • You can try to stop spam text messages by registering your mobile number with the TPS.

(If the spam texts are sent from abroad, there's a problem!)

There's an article about it here on web2text:

    STOP SMS SPAM

    This just in:

Bad news, I'm afraid. I've received an email from Lycos UK:
From the 18th of March, 2004 Lycos UK is ending its FREE SMS service.

    WHY THE CUT?
Unfortunately due to the increase in mobile network provider charges for SMS it is no longer viable for Lycos.co.uk to offer our 2 million mobile members free SMS.

It goes on to advertise its premium email account where you get 30 SMS "free".

    Ah well. :P

I Just used the Clickatell FREE SMS service for the first time to send a couple of FREE texts and it seems to work fine - at least it says that the texts have been sent, I will find out tonight if they arrived. However I would be very interested to hear from anyone else who has used this service whether it means that the numbers they have sent texts to have then been sent junk SMS by Clickatell or anyone else, as I don't want to use the service if that is the case.
I could not use the service that Martin himself recommends because of settings on my computer and I am not prepared to change those settings just to send free texts.

Thanks for the help and advice everyone.

    Peteraj ;)

I just found this one, called genietexter, mentioned in a newsgroup. Its all a bit technical for me but the newsgroup members seem very keen on it.

Someone also said you can send international texts with it too. :)

GenieTexter rocks! It lets you send over 1200 free sms per month! a saving of over £120!

It basically works by interfacing with all the different free SMS sites out there, and lets you use a single address book with all the sites, lets you send to multiple recipients, extra long messages (message spanning), pop mail checking/notification.

It runs on a script system, theres a script for each free SMS site, and you can write your own scripts. Its also got an automatic script updater, so when a site changes, the program can quickly update itself when a new script is released, using the service manager. You can also just install the scripts you want, you dont have to install all the scripts of which there are quite a few!

its also free from adware and spyware, and a really small download, so what are you waiting for? give it a try! :)

tiscali do still give free sms, but only 5 a day, and you have to use them as your isp at least once a month to qualify for the free text.
