  • I would recommend Wagg too - they do several varieties, its not full of junk (no artificial colours or other nasties), its cheap, both my current dog and my lkast one loved it, and have had good health. My last dog made it to fifteen (at least, rescued approx 7 yrs plus old, then we had her for eight years) on Wagg, so I would recommend it from experience.

My new rescue dog enjoys it, and her condition has improved since she arrived here! She is on Wagg Working dog, which is cheaper (no VAT) and has a little more protein and fat in it - as she is young and lively this suits her well, for a dog who needs to watch their weight I would recommend the ordinary one! (I think there is also a wagg light now too!)

You can get details on their website:https://www.waggfoods.co.uk

First off I would question why anyone would want to feed "cheap" dog food? Ever hear the saying you only get out what you put in?

Feeding cheap dog food means you are feeding twice the amounts as they are full of cheap fillers, colours and additives - and not only are dogs liable to become hyper, suffer skin conditions but they pooh for England.

Supermarkets do not stock what is good for your dogs - they stock what the companies pay them to stock ( I know cos I worked checking that they were allocated the shelf space they had paid for)

Nestle and Mars are not animal specialists. They only produce dog food so they can sell what are basically waste products from their human food subsidiaries to the public at a profit. Until supermarkets were the in thing and processed foods our staple diet, there was no such thing as prepared dog food.

Personally I would go and buy a more expensive brand from a company that specialises in Canine nutrition - Naturediet, Burns, Arden Grange and James Well Beloved to name a few. And yes I do mention JWB as although MARS are the major shareholders now they are still run as an independent and the dog food is still unchanged, as are the ethics (no animal testing).

You may find that the initial outlay is higher then you may like but when you work out price per meal, often these work out cheaper in the long run and the benefits to the dogs health is priceless. I buy a 15kg bag of Arden grange for £28 but it lasts 100 meals so works out at 28pence a day to feed my cocker.

Arden grange do no animal testing, use human grade meat/chicken and fish and dont use battery farmed chicken nor do they use any animal derivatives or by products -and I get that peace of mind for 28pnce a day and my dog gets a good coat, skin, teeth, bone structure and is really active yet calm . Thats what i call "cheap" :)

That'd explain why my butchers won't supply it, then!

That is unfortunate. I wouldn't like to feed bleached or treated to my dog, and know that green tripe is what is recommended - what sort do you buy? Are the regulations different when buying from a pet food manufacturer?

If you're going to buy Wagg see if someone you know has a Costco card, I seen that cheap in there. They also sell Autarky in there.

What I will say is every dog is different. What is right for one isn't for another. Swapping and changing food on a regular basis will cause the most stomach upsets usually.
One day I might be more organised...........
    GC: £200

James Wellbeloved gave my wee pup the runs, I've since changed her to Jolleys own brand puppy dry food and she's thriving now. Although I do add in scraps of whatever we're eating too, she's loves rice and chicken and finished my daughters off tonight

  • I used to feed my labrador retriever on Burns, but found that it cost around £10 more for the biggest bag (7kg I think) than James Wellbeloved so I changed to that. Don't think Onyx likes it as much though because he leaves a few biscuits!

Wet food wise I use tuna to make it taste a bit better, must be boring having dried biscuits and pedigree chum wet food is a bit pointless to add to what's already a staple diet, in my opinion? So I go from tinned tuna to tinned pork/sardines or if we have a roast, little bits of leftovers, and sometimes he gets cooked lamb mince with 3 veg. It actually works out quite cheap I think! Maybe 30p a day to make his meals more interesting :p

We have a 6 year old Lab and he thrives on OMEGA TASTY. It is £12.99 for a large bag .

There is always food in his bowl and he is not overweight.

He has very few (and I mean very few) Tit Bits.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.
  • we have 2 dogs, and we tried James Wellbeloved stuff (was recommended this ) but they didnt like it.

They love bakers dried dog food (chicken flavour)
I do mix it with tinned dog food now and again.

Also any scraps left from dinner they get that mixed in with their food.

None of my dogs ever got on with Burns or JWB but wanting to feed an ethically and healthy food as possible I came across Arden Grange http://www.ardengrange.com/

All three dogs I have fed this too inhale it up and it works out to pennies a day feeding - 15kg bag costs around £30 and lasts 3 or 4 months.

I do also feed table scraps (esp veggies), raw bones, chicken wings etc,(not every day) just to keep meals interesting
