Thanks everyone for all your help and advice, I have got the dog warden's contact details now and am going to give them a ring.

On a brighter note my dog has got her picture on the internet! - the rescue I got her from have put some of my piccies of the dog on their website - what do you think...?

.. oh, and does anyone have any suggestions of what she might be a mixture of? She is pretty short legged, about 12 inches at her shoulders I guess, but has quite a long body...

She is a lovely dog, with a great temperement and is a great advert for rescue dogs in my opinion!

    Thanks again,

    FC x

Awww bless her! She is very much like my Spot Dog, although Spot is just black and white, not tri!

After long discussions at work (vets), the general consensus for Spot is Border Collie cross Corgi! And I would say the same for your Badger! :D

OK - back to reading the thread - Badger should be ashamed for distracting me! :p:D
I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

    RIP POOCH 5/09/94 - 17/09/07
  • Tankgirl - do you have a piccie of Spot? Would love to see him! I am certain there is some collie in the mix with Badger, x something stumpy!

Sorry to add to this thread again, but my dog was attacked at the weekend by one of these chav 'status dogs' - my g/f was walking our dog (on a lead) down the road next to ours and this dog just came runnning out of a back garden and clamped itself onto our poor dog's face.

He has three punctures around his ear and a cut leg where he caught it on the pavement trying to get away from the attacking dog.

I have to admit that when my g/f told me what happened (she was very upset) and seeing our poor dog (looked really bad because matted hair and limping made it look worse, though it definately wasn't "good") I flew off the handle and went to find the owner. Luckily I couldn't as I wasn't sure which house was which, and I went around later to a very apologetic owner after I had calmed down.

I have no problem with people owning these dogs so long as they train them properly, socialise them properly and (if this isn't enough) has the dog neutered as well!

To the person who's dog attacked someone, I think you should pay any vets bills - there's a clear difference between playing and an attack, if it wasn't playing and the dog has done damage I think you should pay the bills (your insurance will cover it normally).

EDIT: just realise the two dogs in question in your post were having a general go at each other, this is different to an actual 'attack' and probably six of one and half a dozen of the other. No lasting damage, no worries!

To the person who kicked the dog, I personally don't condone this at all but if it was a choice between that and watching my dog get seriously injured or killed then, in that situation, I'm not sure what I would do. Our friend's dog was nearly killed by another dog and had to be rushed to the vets - in the heat of the moment and against my better judgement I think that I would do just about anything to save my dog even at risk to me. I'd obviously never set out to hurt any animal at all in any other situation, and I'm not so stupid as to not know the difference between playing and attacking.

Ultimately though the owner is to blame for their dog's behaviour.
  • Sorry, Im a bit late to this thread but thought I would post anyway.

As sad and disgusting as it is, you will get nowhere by reporting the incident as we found out a few months ago.

Back in September my Grandad was out walking my Jack Russel Terrier (who was on his lead) in our local park when a Rottweiler came sprinting towards them out of nowhere and attacked my dog, ripping him to shreds and killed him there and then. Both my grandad and the Rottweilers owner tried to pull them apart, but he was just too strong and his jaw was locked onto my dog.

As my dog was now dead, my Grandad was in complete shock and horror and couldn't really stand around in the park with him so didn't take any details and just rushed to take him back. However, once the news had been spread round the village we managed to track the owners down (due to people whos pets had also been attacked by the same dog!!) We reported the incident to the police but was told nothing could be done as it was only a dog which had been attacked and not a person. I personally think this is absolutely disgusting as the dog is obviously a vile, dangerous, and aggressive thing which cannot be controlled by its owners and whats to stop it being a child or someone next time?!

My 17 weeks labrador puppy just got attacked this afternoon (on his lead) in the park in front of my young children by a staff running free, his owner had no control and was a young lad walking the dog for his mother. My dog is at the vet right now and will stay overnight and suffered various punctured wounds which needed stitches. The vet said I should considered myself lucky that the staff did not go for his throat as he would probably have died :-(. When I called the owner to let her know the outcome and the vet bill, she started shouting at me saying she will not even give a penny and that her dog is perfectly safe, she also added that I could call the police (which I did) as it would really not matter. I have been taking my dog to training since we had him to make sure this sort of incident would not happen, and we were not at fault however I feel very angry and let down as I don't know where to go now, Police were not very helpful even if I mentioned that their dog was really dangerous and attacked my dog around a play equipment just after end of school (so very busy ) I have been researching internet and think i have to go through civil court to get this sorted however I only have the name and phone number of the owner as I was in a hurry to get my pet to the vet to stop the intensive bleeding !! any advice would really help thank you .....

It's unlikely the police will be interested as no person was injured but contact your local dog warden (details on the council website) as they can take action against the owner in some cases.

The only thing I can suggest to get the owners address is to keep an eye out for the dog been walked and follow them home...
  • My dog was attacked on tuesday, he is a 10 year old pointer mix. we were walking with my 4 (pointer mix 10, beardie mix 9 1/2, working sheep dog 12 months, border collie 10 weeks) plus 4 others. my dogs are trained to a high standard competing in agility and obedience, I am also an educational officer with the blue cross and regularily take my older dogs with me to schools etc.
I knew all the other owners/handlers and their dogs however one chap had a new dog with him that he had supposedly got the week before. she was a 2-3 year old staffie (plz dont think I am anti staffies as I love them as equally as other breeds) he told me that she had been dumped at stables along with a horse :( and had been there since september. all dogs werte playing nicely I had my pup tucked up inside my coat as he is not yet fully jabbed. the staffie had barged my old beardie a cpl of times and my girl warned her off...the staff took notice and left her alone (she came to me with 12 breaks and fractures and is wary of dogs that barge) altho my beardie is not a dominant dog, I am the leader of my pack, others tend to take notice when she asks them to leave her alone. I will say on this point that none of my dogs have ever been in a fight nor have they ever been even slightly aggressive to another dog..my beardie teaches all the fosters that come to me correct dog ettiquette and has very good dog to dog social skills.
as usually happens the humans were all chatting while I was ball throwing and watching the dogs. the staff just went for my old boy...he was stood looking at me barking for the ball and did not know what hit him! she got him on the side and as he fell to the ground she locked onto his leg and refused to release,
her owner was punching her in the head while my boy was lying there screaming. eventually she released, my boy was covered in blood.
we went straight to the vet where he had 32 stitches.
I was told today that the chap is telling people that my dog started it by snarling!!! not true also that the story of the staff's past was a lie and actually she was given up because she tore the family cat to pieces, he has been telling people that I will not get a penny out of him.
what upsets me most is his telling others that my boy started it :(
there was not a mark on his dog and yet mine had stitches on his face his side and of course his leg
what can be done in the eyes of the law? nothing

does a dog's life mean so little that they are not protected by the law??

Firstly I hope your dog is better today - it's a scary thing when one of your dogs is attacked by another dog. I often pack walk my dogs with friends and we meet other people in similar situations as you have described. However...it is very easy to become complacent - I'm sure I'm as guilty of this as anyone, particularly with my big Shep as it would have to be something pretty large and strong to take him on. He's been snapped at by smaller dogs, but he just looks bemused and walks away.

As far as getting the other chap to pay - this is quite a grey area I'm afraid. You would have to take him to court yourself I think - maybe Small Claims? I'm sure others will come along who have more experience than me to help with this.

I do think you might just have to move on from this. You know, and I'm sure your friends know, that it wasn't your dog. If he wants to claim so then let him. It's always going to be your word against his unless anyone else saw it, no matter what each dog's history is I'm afraid.

Also - you should really have started your own thread, as this thread is quite old. That will save confusion.
