When we had mice I rang the local enviromental health department and they were very helpful, definately worth a phone call. They recommended some poison sachets from a local pet shop and said I was to put them in the loft, under the sink, in the meter cupboard and in the airing cupboard. They worked! The enviromental health said they would come out and sort it for us if we wanted but there was a charge of £25.

We had mice in our semi. Thery were even getting into our cooker  .
We traced them to the cupboard under the stairs where the gas/elec metres are. They were coming though the gap in the floorboards around the metre.
We put poison down and plyboard all over the cupboard floor, filled the gaps around under the skirtings and then cheepy vinyl tiles.
Haven't had any problems since (fingers crossed)

We had more success after using value chocolate spread to get their attention. We caught them in droves. You need to kill them as they just come back!

We had a bad mice infestation, they were coming through the floor with the gas pipe just behing the oven, its a built in unit and the first sign we had was when we found eaten crayons in the kitchen drawers and poop on all the plates and bowls.

You may have to check all ways in to your house such as water and gas pipes, the little blighters can squeeze through gaps as small as 2-3 mm.

We used traps with a chocolate button as bait

Not caught any little meeces so far. I still can't work out how they are getting in,or where they are breeding if they are mice-in-residence. Cavity walls are insulated...except the one between me and the neighbour. They could be in there ...WAIL

I have tried Little Nipper, Humane Traps, and poison bait with NADA result so far!

However I have found another kind of trap which I am going to screw my courage up and try. A glue trap. Hopefully it will work, but it means I have to go drown them in person :(

How did you good people track them down? At the moment there are even no visible droppings, and there weren't the other night when I saw Morris the Mouse in person...

Hi, we were horribly infested with mice last year so you have my sympathy. We had loads of them in the garden and house. We're renovating the house and had gaps all over the place they were coming up in. Eventually we figured out they were getting into the house between the bottom of the brick wall and the concrete going around. Filling that gap (which was minute) in has seemed to stop them. We realised this when a baby mouse got stuck in the gap, before this we had no idea they could squeeze in such a tiny gap. We had so many we didn't need to 'track them down' - in one day I caught 20 in one small room

Firstly, get the seed type of poison, not the blue type, as our mice wouldn't touch that. Put the poison around where you have seen the mice, but obviously out of reach of kids and other pets.

Secondly, you need the snap traps, and set them using a variety of bait. We tried loads and the best sort was chocolate spread as they have to stop to lick it rather than nick the chocolate button and run. You really need to figure out where they are coming up into the house, in the gaps etc, and set the traps around this area.

Personally I wouldn't use glue traps, I know what it is to feel desperate but I think they are very cruel. At least the snap trap is quick.

I tried humane traps but these did nothing.

Our mice were climbing the outside walls and everything, so you need to go round your house and check every inch of the outside for tiny gaps, around pipes, guttering, the bottom of the wall etc and fill them in. If they are coming from your neighbours house, speak to them to see if they've seen any. But they are still getting into your house from under the floorboards etc, so you should be able to catch them. We ignored the problem for a while, and they bred!! So you need to keep perservering, I believe if we got rid of ours anyone can, good luck!!!!!!

Peanut butter, works well as bait too.

Wouldnt use glue traps either, very inhumane and apparently they scream when they are trapped:eek:
Have you tried the sonic deterrents?

And when filling holes, remember that mice can squeeze through a hole the size of a pencil:o

  • We had mice last year (disgusting little things), I tried the humane traps which did nothing, in the end we called the council who charged £80 and they laid numerous bait/poison traps around the house. They were gone within a week or so. Beware though if you use poison because apparently the poison is a blood thinner and the little blighters like to die near warm places such as radiators etc and the smell! Holy cow it is horrendous!

I hate mice now, in fact I had to rehome my guineapigs - partly cos they were the culprits attracting them in the first place but also, they reminded me too much of mice and I couldn't cope with it _pale_

The key is to keep up with it, every day, and keep going until you don't see anymore mice.

If you haven't seen any droppings around then chances are you have a stray mouse, and they are harder to catch than just one. The pest control lady told me if you only have one mouse they can live easily on the crumbs on the floor, so don't tend to go for the traps or poison, whereas if there are a lot there isn't enough crumbs to feed them all. So I guess the next thing would be to make sure your house is very clean, nothing for the mouse to eat, and hopefully it'll take the trap or poison.

I became quite an expert in mice catching :p

The other thing my neighbour tried as she had a stray mouse, was to borrow a cat! Another friend brought her cat round for a few hours, and it caught the mouse.
