Blocked toilet - Help!!

Hi,
I've managed to partially block my toilet by flushing kitchen roll (used whilst cleaning the bathroom) down it. You can't see it anymore but its somewhere in the system IYKWIM? Stupid I know!!
Anyway, when its flushed now the water almost reaches the top then slowly subsides back down again.
Any ideas on how I can sort this out without resorting to Dynarod?
Anything I can flush down the loo (like a sink unblocker for toilets etc)?

Any ideas would be gratefully received!

A mop! If you have a mop put it down the toilet and plunge a few times. Flush and repeat. Has worked on several occasions for me and others. I think I first saw a plumber do it!

if you have got a round toilet brush use it to plunge up and down a few times, then flush again to see if this has worked, I don't know what this does but I do it when my loo is blocked with too much loo paper. Maybe a bit of bleach after you plunge, might disintigrate the paper a bit, but don't splash the bleach all over yourself

You must have read my mind;)
  • OK don't panic. This has happened to me loads of times. (Well not a kitchen roll down the loo, but a blocked toilet!) I know it's scary when the water fills the bowl right up to the top! It's actually a good sign that the water subsides, shows the water is draining, albeit slowly.

First line of attack is, unbelievably, toilet cleaner. It doesn't matter which one. Allow the water to subside, then swoosh a lot around the rim, and a lot in the bottom, then flush. Keep repeating this a good few times, waiting for the water to subside each time. This should clear the blockage. If it doesn't work the first time, apply cleaner, then wait a while (1/2 hours) and try again. You'll have to repeat the cleaner routine as above. If it still doesn't work try something stronger like Limescale Remover, Drain Unblocker, using the same method.

I'd say you'll get that toilet unblocked within a couple of hours, no problem! :D

rachel mk - are you clear yet?

I tend to do the plunger thing or jsut repeatedly keep flushing the loo (after the waters subsided of course first!)

Unfortunately I'm in work and can't have a delve around my rim!
Will have to save that pleasure for later this evening - thanks to everyone that's posted so far - keep the ideas coming - I'll try anything (will pick up more rubber gloves on the way home!)
  • Forgot about the plunger, I agree that the plunger is supremo for blockages. Although my method works if you don't have one handy.

I've moved your thread to the in my home board where you should get enough help to avoid calling out a plumber!

My favourite is to tip a bucket of water down the loo real fast, this had cleared *ahem* blockages in the past. I would try chemical remedies as a last resort just in case any water splashes back at you and ends up burning you.

Ok, my kids have blocked our loo with too much paper approx 4 times now and i've managed to unblock each time...

First try what the others have said with a toilet brush. If this doesn't work then try putting a bucket of boiling water down.

If this doesn't work, go and buy some costic soda from wilkinsons (i don't know if supermarkets sell it but i bet they do) and read the instructions carefully and use rubber gloves. I have never had it splash in my face before as i'm careful when i use it....you mix it with water then put it down your loo and wait.

I once called someone out to unblock our loo at my old house and it cost us £120 (and this was 11 years ago) i learnt then that they use the same chemicals to unblock your loo, so as a last resort costic soda can save you over £100.
