"i have a friend who swears by premium bonds. She has 6 accounts maxed out and it is her only investment. She loves telling me she is winning all the time. She has never worked out what her return on her £300,000 actually is over a year."

How does friend have 6 accounts maxed out?  Only allowed 1 per person?

FWIW, 2x£25 on my one maximum holding.  Pleased to get something.
Yes, I'm wondering how anybody can hold more than one NS&I account unless you hold them in different names, maiden name and married name, but when you open an account don't you have to quote a National Insurance number or something.   So long since I opened mine I can't remember what info they require.
Having just done it this morning - if you are a UK resident then you don't have to supply your NI number.  You are asked for your Tax Identification Number (which in the UK is you NI number) but if you enter it whilst saying you are UK resident, it says you haven't filled the form in properly.

Seems as good a place as any to ask this question ... how long does it normally take to create an NSI Premium Bond account ? I signed up this morning and got the receipt for the opening investment pretty much straight way but, since then, I have had nothing ?
Not totally sure but I think the account is opened immediately. Certainly if you have an account buy additional bonds they are added immediately. Have you set up online access? Can you log on and have a look.
I was able to log in straight away - but stupidly forgot to write down my NS&I number presuming that an email would promptly arrive confirming what it was.

You can get your NS&I number from here:

I bought my first PB's of £3000 in Dec 2018. I then won £25 in Feb 19, £25 in June 19 and £75 in Oct 19.Up to then I thought these premium Bonds are great!   :D Since then nothing.    :(

My wife bought £3000 at the same time and has never won anything..

As interest rates have become stupidly low we've decided to up our PB's. £23K and £33K respectively, Lets see if this makes a difference.

Yep - £125 of winnings on a £3k holding in your first year is definitely what you'd call above-average luck, so it's not too surprising to hear you haven't won anything since.

I've held large amounts similar to your newly increased totals for a number of years now and have received winnings equivalent to between 1 and 1.5% every year (average of around 1.2%), but bear in mind the prize fund has been between 1.15 and 1.50% during that time though (1.40% for the last 3 years), so this will undoubtedly drop with the big reduction in the prize fund rate to 1%. I'm thinking around 0.8% would be realistic, as big holders with average luck will often get just under the advertised prize fund rate.

December's draw has actually just taken place as I write this - only £25 this month for me.

I've been really lucky, 2 x £25 on my £50k for December.  So, for the year (I've held £50k for most of the year or just under that amount) I've won £925 so 1.85%. I have to say though, since my prizes go into my current account, it does feel different from interest (of course I know it's not the same), because it's merged with my account rather then getting it in a lump sum.

    According to MSE:
"You are lucky - only 2.65% of people who have put £50,000 in premium bonds over 1 year win more than £925".
Average luck would be £450 so certainly have been lucky!

I feel like I should have used that money on something worthwhile?! Not sure what but I try to be a bit of a money saver leading me to perhaps not treat myself enough! One month when I got over £100 I bought a random person from a facebook group a month's subscription to a stationary box club to celebrate!  Having said this, I do have to buy 3 years worth of my state pension soon, so, there goes a not insignificant sum of money :)
