I won £50 this month and the fella won 3 x £50. We won nothing last month. We have the full holding each.

His bonds are doing way better than mine. Since getting the full holding (him in June, me in July) he's won £450 to my £200.

Most of his wins since the big one seem to start with the same 6 digits (is that a block?). 7 out of the 8 in fact. 3 of my 4 do also. We bought the bulk of them at the same time so will they all start with the same 6 digits apart from our initial investments?
  • I have £1,200 worth and buy £50 worth each month. I've won my first £50 this month and am chuffed to bits.

at 5% before tax ,return £125 a month on £30000,so you are both out of pocket.

That's why bonds are a bad buy unless

    a) you've used up your ISa allowance

    b) you pay 40% on your savings

I take it you two haven't read the whole thread then.

I don't think Lea would say she's out of pocket, or that Premium Bonds are a bad buy, since one of her partner's bonds won £100,000 :rotfl:

Yes, but Meanies comment is still valid for anyone with average luck...

A 5% account returns 3% after higher-rate tax, marginally beaten by PBs. It returns 4% for standard-rate payers - a better return than average PBs.

I still reckon they're worth a go with a small percentage of (non-ISA) savings though - it could be you (whoops, wrong advert).
  • Just thought I would share my good fortune.

I have £1500 worth of premium bonds, the majority bought last year.

So far I have won £50 (October 05 - the first draw they were eligible for), £50 (October 06) and £100 (November 06).

I appreciate this is not the norm on this amount of bonds and I'll probably win nothing else for years, but at the moment I'm quite happy!

Imagine someone holding forth on biology whose only knowledge of the subject is the Book of British Birds, and you have a rough idea of what it feels like to read Richard Dawkins on theology: Terry Eagleton
  • I had premium bonds (£4000 worth) for about 10 years.
I never saw a penny... got rid of them the moment I found out that I had them (were purchased for me when I was a fair bit younger).
Don't spend it all at once.
