There are so many PB holders who have never won anything despite holding bonds for years.  It would probably be an administrative nightmare but maybe for period during the Coronavirus recession they should breakdown one of the two Million Pound Winners and split it into £50 prizes so that a lot more people have a chance of winning something !

Maybe not split that far, but say up the £10,000 prizes.   I think that'd do more "good" than 2 people winning £1M
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)

Doing what you suggest would only increase the number of winners by about 0.55%, i.e. it would be in insignificant 'rounding error' territory rather than anything meaningful!

How different things are now. Adjusted for inflation, the first top prize was £25,000. Your bonds weren't entered into the draw until you'd owned them for six months, either.
What was better? 1957 or 2020?

Yes, I accept that but sometimes perhaps it's a matter of forgetting the "Actuary's Hat" and trying to put a little joy, albeit fleetingly, into a few peoples' lives !
I,d like to think that if somebody was facing redundancy and won a prize on Ernie for the first time, it would at least give them a flash of much needed positivity.     I hate the thought of a world where everything is governed by £.s.d  !!

Just as well it's nearly fifty years since that world existed then ;)

Polymaff - how true.  My first bonds were purchased in the early sixties In my early working life  where five of us were in a syndicate , each contributing  £1 a week from our modest  Wages and every 5th week you got £5 to buy bonds.  I,ve hung oNto those binds through thick and thin, two redundancies and lean times, yet none  of the blighters have ever come up for me.  In contrast, some of the blocks  purchased in more affluent times have come up with multiple £25 winners.  The luck of the draw I guess bUt I like to hang onto those paper £1 bonds as a souvenir of an age   long passed !

    £150 on full holding for August - 1 x £100 & 2 x £25, nice to finally see a prize larger than £25  :)
Never let the perfume of the premium overpower the odour of the risk

Has anyone on this site ever won or know anyone who has won a big prize on PB?
  • A work colleagues brother won £10,000 back in the 1990’s with only £100 invested. A friend of mine won £1,000 with £2,000 invested.
