Nothing on £40,000 this month, enough to convince me this is a mugs game so would rather get nearly a grand a year net interest on a bog standard 3%.

didn't you know gambling isn't certain?

where do you get a bog standard 3% on 40,000?

£40k 'invested' and no wins. Hardly won anything this year. Can anyone tell me the best place to invest £40k? I have £46k in savings in total, £6k in my current account... I know I'm not exactly being money savvy!

I think you can make your 40k do a lot better for you by looking at current accounts discussed on this site.

x 2 Santander 123 accounts (one single, one joint) will get you 3% on 40k provided you fulfil the criteria.

There are a variety of other accounts paying higher interest on smaller sums.

To my mind, Premium bonds have only a limited role for most people - I do hold them but only as I have maximised the better savings options elsewhere and I need to have the money accessible for a house deposit in the (hopefully) near future. Can't see other reasons why people would hold them.

They do provide some (minimal) excitement for one day a month - until you realise you haven't won anything meaningful.
  • I have them 'because'.

Because I can't be doing with all the faffing about involved in the current account shuffling game to get 3/4/5% or whatever.

Because I refuse to give a High St bank any more of my money than absolutely necessary.

Because I'm distrustful of the whole 'investment' industry and refuse to contribute to another knobhead's mink slippers fund.

Because my family is huge and one of the is highly likely to land me in a situation where access to cash semi-instantly would be beneficial.

Because I'm a gambler at heart.

Because I don't really care about inflation eroding my cash, I'll spend it before I notice that.

    Fair enough.
