Mum has around £7000 in PBs and has averaged around £1200 a year over the last five years, she started with £1000 so the total has amounted from this. Not a bad return I would say but I know people who have never had a win that also have good amounts invested. She obviously has had the luck of the draw !

Money taken from 0% credit cards and put into a savings account, or in this case Premium Bonds.

Cheers. I'm a lot wiser now :o However, I save 20 pences and everything below which i used to then deposit into my daughters bank accounts but which now is deposited into my two grandchildrens accounts :o
  • Hi everyone

Thanks for all your advice - I was never sure about premium bonds but I understand them alot more now and am going to invest. I've got £11 from years ago(1967) and never won anything. However, my dad won (not sure of amount) in 1965 and it paid for a holiday in Italy so must have been quite a bit.

I'm going to start with £500 - is it 2 months before you can be entered in the draw?

  • Hi winkasgirl

You have to hold them a full month before they can be entered into the draw so, depending on when you buy them, you could wait anything from five to eight weeks...roughly.

Obviously it's best to buy them on the last day of a month, then you'll only need to wait a maximum of 31 days until they start working, therefore reducing the lost interest from where the money is currently held.

Holding £11 worth would mean you're due a prize once per 181.8 years so it's hardly surprising nothing has been won since 1967.
Holding £500 will mean you're due a prize once per 4 years, also bear in mind unless you're a higher rate tax payer it's less of a wise investment and more of a gamble.

Amazes me in general how little people know about odds and average returns.

17%/year return for five years is truly amazing and explains why my returns have been so miserable. As she hacked in to Ernie?

    .....out of curiosity -

Has anyone ever paid for Premium bonds over the phone using a debit card, and then physically received the bonds through the post, only for the payment never having been taken from the card/account ??

I've had this happen to me, its been around 5 weeks now - very miffed by the whole situation!

Normally the payment is taken within a week when using this method.

Slightly annoying too, as I have this money waiting to be taken, and I keep forgetting its due to go out but often include it in my whats available figureand end up miscalculating....aaarrgghh!! !
