I have just sent them an email suggesting getting rid of the 2nd Million prize and sharing that around the 5k and 10k winners. I will keep you informed of what they say.

    Had my reply:-
Thank you for your enquiry Mrs ******,

We keep the prize structure continually under review. Our aim is always to
pay out as many prizes as possible to customers. Removing one of the £1m jackpots, at this point in time, would not make any significant difference to the odds. If base rates fall further it may be something we will need to do in the future. We know our customers value the chance of winning a high
value prize, as well as winning regularly and we try to maintain a balance.

    Kind regards

Is it me or has the meaning of 'spread it round' passed him by altogether

I was planning on e-mailing them to suggest that they redistribute the prize fund more equally. People don't invest for the chance of winning 50 or 100 pounds; they invest for the chance of a big prize. So why is 95% of the prize fund allocated to lower value prizes?

I've never won on the premium bonds, have had £600 for about 2 years. Wont be purchasing anymore.

  • Personally I would build up a pot in a savings account at the current time (even though the interest isn't great) but this is purely for the fact that when I use to put in money each month I never won anything and just lost a years worth of interest in the end.

I've now got a bigger pot and win about 8 times a year. My parents both have the max (30k each) and win about 9 to 10 times a year but normally win a couiple of prizes a month and then they might miss a month and win a larger amount. My dad calculated his prize money last year on the max and it was something like £1,400 which isn't bad if you ask me and would be ideal if that happened again this year as it would beat any of the interest paying accounts i've seen on the market at the moment.

But maybe you could win the big one or even some small prizes but the chances are VERY greatly decreased in my opinion.

I know many people that doubt the premium bonds but if you can put 15k plus in them then from my personal experience you will win about 8 times (or maybe i'm just lucky).

Basically to sum it up. If you don't have a lump sum to put in premium bonds and don't care for interest and want to have a very small chance of winning some prizes then opt for premium bonds. Otherwise remove the money and get yourself an interest paying account and atleast gain something for your savings.

ALWAYS buy those bonds towards the end of the month - a 4th of Dec purchase wont be entered into the draw until AFTER one full calendar month has passed this means - January - in your case, meaning you only have a chance from Feb onwards when your bonds are entered into the draw...
