We have held the max in bonds for a couple of years now, so between us we have £60k, and today they are being cahed in. In the 2 years of holding we have won the grand total of £1,185, hardly the 3.5% they reckon you will get, plus the chance of a decent enough win. All we have has is the odd £50 with a couple of £100's thrown in.

What a waste, in somewhere like ICICI we would have got around £7,500 if left alone there, so that's where we're going.
  • That's really tough, Orchidea, and not my experience with PBs at all. Odd how the luck of the draw goes. Hope you win some small ones today.

My hubby and I have just invested in Premium bonds due to enter the April 08 draw.

    Hubby holding: 30K
Me: 29,915K (have some old ones from years back I didn't want to cash in!) I won £50 on these sometime in the 80's as a wee lass!

We are maxed out on isa's and he is a higher rate tax payer, so for us it's a safe short term investment/gamble and a bit of fun.
We plan to leave them in there for 12-18 months.

Will keep you posted how we do.

Quite a reasonable approach. Have you considered index linked savings certs as well?
In case you hadn't already worked it out - the entire global financial system is predicated on the assumption that you're an idiot:cool:

Yes I had a look, but our current plan is to see how the housing market fares in the next 1-2 years and I beleive that index link savings are locked in for 3-5 years? Is that right?
As we need our savings for our deposit, we need fairly flexible access to it.
  • had £15,000 for 1 year, won £550 first month then £50 each month after, wonder what march brings!

    Hi,

To get the highest return it is best to keep the certs for their full term. However, provided you keep them for a year they are acceptable.

Thanks, we have about 18k left to *put* somewhere so i'll have a read up tomorrow. We will definatly leave the money for a year, it's possible we may leave the money for longer than the 2 years, but we like to be able to get at it if needed!
And anything tax free is always a bonus!

I have everything crossed as I could do with a boost right now and don't want to have to cash them in for a short term cash flow problem - I love my PBs but that is one of the reasons they are there you can always get your money back if you need it.
