Sorry to sound dim, but do i have to contact BT first or not

No need at all to contact BT before or after signing up to 18866.

Though if you are on anything other than Together 1, then I would call BT to reduce your service down to Together 1.

Just register with 18866 and within minutes you can use 18866.

Any call you want to route over 18866 you just dial 18866 and then the full number you wish to call - even local numbers need the area code dialled.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

Oh and while you are deciding, if you are option1 with BT then ring them up to go to option2 for free for 3 months... this will give you free weekend and evening calls for no extra charge... gives you more breathing space to decide on your options...

    Hope this helps

Just took up this offer as I had been looking at other CPS providers for exactly the same. Just need to remember to drop to Option 1 at the end of three months.

As I mentioned on that thread use Martin's Tart Alert to remind you.

I just got my alert through to remind me that my TalkTalk offer is about to end ;)

If you go to Talk Talk for 3months you can have all your 01/02 calls free 24/7(whilst you are deciding what to do!!!) not just Evening and Weekends.

I don't make enough daytime calls to need this package. I know it's free for the first three months but if I decide not to go with Talk Talk it's more hassle to change.

In which cased, I'll amend my earlier post and recommend just:

    (1) You change to BT Together Option 1 - so you just pay BT (by DD) £10.50/month for your line rental.

    (2) Then, you sign up for www.call18866.co.uk and use the 18866 prefix to make all your UK 01/02 calls (even local ones - on which you'll have to use the local STD code).
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

    Heinz,

Thanks for your help. I have signed up to call18866 and will use this for daytime calls. I fully intend to change to a CPS provider but at the moment I'm a little unsure as to who to choose between
    Talk Talk
    Tele2
    Justdialsaver lite

Justdial saver lite sounds ideal for me with free evening and weekend calls plus capped mobile rates at no monthly cost. However when you click on apply the application form still states £4.99pm for this. I've emailed them for an answer. I had asked about their reliability in another thread but have not had a lot of answers yet.

Tele2 and Talk Talk seemed to have more subscribers at the moment and people seem happy with them.

This is why I decided to take up the BT offer for the moment as it gave me some room to decide and saves me the extra £4pm that I'm currently paying whilst I decide.

I would just go with JustDial Light tariff but be aware you can't yet (as far as I'm aware) view your billing online and therefore I assume they just email you with invoice/bill details and use Call18866 during the daytime.

I believe JustDial's mobile call costs cap is the first of the its kind and excellent for those mobile calls that are generally under 20mins in length.

Remember that you are not on a minimum term of any kind if you just use CPS and therefore transfer your calls only to either JustDial, Tele2 or TalkTalk so that if you don't like them then you simply switch to another provider for CPS.

If you are still unsure about JustDial then I'd recommend the next best option and that is Tele2's free evening&weekend option. I know its only till end of this year but its better than nothing. Once you get into next year you can simply change to another provider who may be doing the same deal or even consider trying JustDial. Remember Tele2 don't have a call length limit on their evening&weekend tariff unlike TalkTalk who will charge after 70mins (JustDial is 2hours which is lot more realistic than 70mins).

We are currently on OneTel's free evening&weekend package that ends April next year and unless another provider is offering the free evening&weekend then I know we'll be trying JustDial's free evening&weekend along with Call18866 during the daytime.

We use an Orchid dialler (3 in fact) to route our calls depending on time of day and type of call which saves all the messing around trying to remember to dial 18866 during the daytime, etc.

With TalkTalk (or OneTel) then the only thing they are both doing free is free weekend calls unlike Tele2 and JustDial who are both doing free evening & weekend calls.

    Thanks for all that.

I've just ordered an Orchid dialler as I doubt my sons would use the prefix reliably. I went for the V4 so that I can program it to use different options when I make my mind up. At the moment I asked for it to be set up to use Call18866 during the day and BT the rest of the time.

I'll see what kind of response I get from JustDial as to why their free option quotes £4.99 on its application form. Until that's sorted out I won't sign up. As you say there is no minimum term with CPS providers apart from the usual change over/set up time - I suppose this will vary with each provider.
