Hi
I bought a soup maker on a deal before Christmas, a bit of an extravagance I thought, but I loved to think I could throw everything in then go for a shower, get dressed & have soup for work. It suits me because I love things that can be left by themselves & are "one pot" such as slow cooker.
Anyway I have used it about 4 times a weeks since-I love it!
Have made broccoli & stilton -this was a bit runny, will put a potato in next time.
My favourite so far was 2 packs of mini/baby fresh sweet corn reduced to 17p, creame fraiche, one small onion, Oxo, - cream of sweet corn -it was so yummy.- Have also done leak & potato.
- Mixed winter veg
- Cream of onion-with white onions
- carrot & fresh coriander
- spiced turnip -this was because I had huge turnip, had used some for mash with potato, then used some in the above winter veg soup, and needed to use the rest.
- My other favourite is butternut squash-chopped it up with the skin on as well (disregarded the pips) and added onion. I think 1 large butternut would actually do 3 "fills" of the soup maker.
- My most simple & easy and very cheap was 3 sad large pieces of sliced ham that no one was using for sandwiches before they had to be thrown away, and a tin of marrow fat peas-about 20p, onion & water. Made the most tasty pea & ham soup-without any chopping!
A potato seems to thicken it up slightly...
Like the sound of the ham mash-up!
I did a chunky veg (celery, carrot, fennel, garlic, parsnip, onion, basil, broccoli) but gave it a little blitz before serving which worked well.I like broccoli and blue cheese soup:
Just use broccoli, leeks and potato plus a stock cube. (pre cook the potato) Let the soup maker do its work then add 3- 4 laughing cow light blue cheeses. Use the juice function to mix them in.
I also like carrot and coriander. For this I use just carrot, potato and small amount of leeks. Plus stock cube, seasoning and coriander. Like above I precook the potato. Other than that it makes the soup for you.
Love the sound of Carrot n Corriander. Wonder an alternative to leeks?
Cheese sounds a good idea. (the canned soup variety is a bit sickly)0 -

Would an onion do? I tend to use an onion in a lot of my soups-but I do love them too!
Onions are cheaper then leeks, although nothing beats a thick potato & leek soup.
I am new to this but I have never pre-cooked a potato-though it do dice it raw quite small.
I had to put the turnip spiced soup through the soup maker twice-so I definitely should have slightly cooked the cubes-maybe in the micro?
My friend makes a soup with cottage cheese, so I'm just going to Google that now, as I need to use up 1/2 a tub and it'll do for lunch tomorrow.:j0 -

Do 'red onions' make any difference?
I made a parsnip and apple with a white onion but maybe better with a red un?
If you do a chunky blend it cooks longer and you can always blend at the end.0 -

Oh great thanks, I haven't even tried the chunky setting yet, as I've been pleased with the puree soups.
I did think of putting a red onion in when I was making a creamy soup-think it was the butternut squash-but I was worried the colour would not look too appetising!
Just found a couple of recipe's for red onion soup which could be adapted I'm sure:

Before Xmas I bought a potted basil & potted coriander for the kitchen window cill, they are still going strong, and I have chives outside the back door, I always throw a few leaves in nearly every soup. Obviously more coriander if it was carrot & coriander.
As I am a cheap skate, and like finding things that are nourishing and cheap to make, my best soup would be very reduced vegetables, like the sweet corn one I did.
This soup maker is making me use up bits that have been in fridge ages, or about to go out of date. Before I might have thrown them-only because I had no time to make soup in a pan, and clear up..............so really I am admitting I am lazy!!!!:j0 -

I luv your style........
My first go was a bit like dish water / no frills canned soup! (Tomato, Carrot, potato, onion, Italian herbs, stock)
It's like one (or two) extra ingredient/s can make all the difference.0 -
