  • NEWBIE ALERT!!! please be gentle!

Went to my local today (Boots that is) and noticed that huggies nappies were on buy 2 for £15.

Went through till with triple points for parenting club AND triple points for 12 days of triple points promotion.

So at 36p per pound refund in ac points the nappies were in effect 2 for £10.

I hope that makes sense, its hard to explain, but I was happy!

I am a Boots newbie and this thread is so confusing!!
    Hi Ragtimeplayer :santa2:
I'd suggest you don't plunge in with the degree level points-gathering perhaps - start small :snow_grin
Whenever I go into Boots, its always very busy (Barnsley store) and I wouldn't dare hold up the queue to haggle with the person on the till!
You shouldn't need to haggle with most of the vouchers from the machine, just hand them over with your adv card. If you've picked up an item that someone on here has recommended, which is cheaper than the points on offer, try it and see. If the cashier does say it's not valid you only need to reprint out the voucher and try another till (pref. the other side of the store). If the thought of gambling to get an item that isn't meant to be in the promotion makes you nervous, why not get something else that's eligible for the points - even though you'll probably pay more by not trying the soap or whatever at the till, you'll have the peace of mind that the voucher will work without any problem and you've gained back whatever the points were worth.

I also find it's useful to tally the points I think I'm going to get on the purchase so you can glance at your receipt as soon as you get it, or watch the screen on the till.
Also, how do you know how many points an item is worth? does it say it near the item or do you just find out later when you check your card?
The cost of the item in points is the cost in pence, or do you mean bonus points on specific purchases? If the latter, look out for deals marked on the shelf edge eg 'buy two get 500 extra points!' or 'triple points on all X cosmetics'. If you look at the deals in the advantage card machine you will see deals along the lines of 'buy any item* from the X range and get 100 extra points' (the * will undoubtedly exclude the soap and face masks  though sometimes the tills still apply the points to these exceptions anyway!) Normal points are 4 per pound (currently 12 per pound - triple points event!) which is a 4% discount providing you want to save with the bank of Boots :)
I hate confrontations so can't imagine myself being assertive or arguing with the till lady if she didn't agree with me over the points or voucher value of something.
I don't like them either. I tend to find that most things work out pretty much as they should, and on the occasions that you do think you've lost a few points because the till has done something odd it's just a choice of is it enough points (and clear cut) to go and explain why it's wrong, or not worth your time and sanity.
(I should qualify this statement by saying Boots tills sometimes do *very* odd sums, or lump extra points into two or three different places so you have to work harder to follow what you've just been given or not. But on the plus side they also do things like take off discounts after giving you points at full value.)
Where do you get all these double vouchers etc from?
The usual sources are: Check the advantage card machine for any deals offered, look in the vicinity of tills for leaflets, pick up the free magazine as it has a page of offers, join any clubs that you're eligible for eg club for mothers (can't remember the exact name!) of small children, registering for Boots.com offers and updates - you may get sent offers in the post. Double or triple points events are always heralded by humongous window displays in store :rudolf:
I know its a lot of questions and I don't even have my official advantage card yet but please help a newbie out!
I hope some of this is helpful and isn't stating too much of the obvious :xmastree:

  • Ragtimeplayer, i went into the Barnsley store on Tuesday, i had voucher for 200 points for botanics skin care so i bought some wipes at 99p, when i gave them the voucher i said it might not work, when she scanned it it added the points but were'nt on my receipt, so she got someone to come who was very helpful and apologetic, i had to wait 5 mins for her to return but she apologised again, the staff are great at Barnsley don;t be scared to ask if your not sure.

  • Hi everyone, I posted earlier forgot about this thread. Another goodie from Boots. 100 point voucher from the AD machine, if you buy ANY shampoo, conditioner or setting product. I have been informed that it works with the cheaper brands....fill your boots (pardon the pun)!!!!

Thank you so much for that post, it was extremely well written and very easy to understand.
I am a bit nervous as I don't yet know how it all works as I only got my temporary card last week.
However as I have been following these threads for a while, I did take the plunge today and got the Boots N07 offer of the three for two giftsets and all three bags. I had no idea what I was doing really and what the end price would be but it all went through and she charged me £30.00 for the lot, I also got her to validate my receipt as I couldn't find my temporary card.

    :T I am so happy!

Thank you Thank you Thank you!

  • One thing I would like to ask, do you have to have a voucher when you buy something that has extra points?

ie i bought some of the evening primrose shower gel today but as I don't have a "real" card yet, i can't print any vouchers off so I wondered if it added them automatically.

Also, when I looked at my receipt, there aren't any points on it that i can see, only a validation number so I have no idea if I gained any points by buying it, please educate me!
