I don't think I could cope with cloth hankies.I remember when I was a child we had a soaking bucket(with dettol in it) for used hankies. It would sit there in the washhouse till washday everyweek getting fuller. Then there's the washing and ironing. We children used to love to get the job of ironing the hankies.
I don't buy expensive tissues just mid priced ones and unless we both have a severe cold we don't use that many realy so in my case I think I'll just stick to tissues.

    Hi Moaners

As to how far use of cloth extends - you could try visiting Jennifer's blog on "Home Matters Most" and check out the goods she sells!:D

Though I have a confession to make <cough> I use tissues myself if I get a cold. Can all too clearly remember being revolted by having to use handkerchiefs as a child. (It's okay - I'll send myself off for a couple of Hail Marys or Hail Martins.)

We use tissues here. I just think when it comes to germ-spreading, the tissues are more sanitary than handkerchiefs. Not to mention the cleaning - eewww!

I think there is a place in our lives for both types.

If I've got a cold, I don't want to keep germ-laden cotton hankies hanging around the place and would much rather throw them away - I've slept with half a loo-roll under my pillow on many an occasion!

But I'm sure none of us want the males in our lives to accompany us to 'an occasion' with paper tissues in his pocket. Same with us, when it comes to 'the lady-like dabbing of the eyes' at a wedding - a white cotton hankie looks much better than opening a pack of tissues.

On the other hand, if you've got kids, paper tissues are fine for a 'spit and rub' on their faces while you're out for the day - wicked laugh at the thought of the faces that kids used to pull at that one! (Joking of course, in this day of baby wipes that little trick no longer has to exist!).

I bought some plain white cotton hankies edged with lace at a local haberdashers/fabric store. I then used the embroidery transfers given free with a craft magazine and did the work in white embroidery thread - the effect is really pretty. The secret was to keep the design as simple as possible, not to use too many stitches and not to work too tight.

Sounds nice idea - pretty hankies for "occasions". Oh well - gotta stick to tissues anyways me - as every single time I cry my nose starts up in sympathy:rolleyes: B.....y annoying when you're crying with anger as I have a tendency to do - doesnt exactly give the right impression:cool:

Dh and ds1 use hankies (and are quite often donated unwanted pressies from other people). If anyone has a cold they go into a mix of water and bleach before washing. If anyone has anything really awful we use tissues and burn them on the fire.

Dh has always used them since before we were married so it's just one of those things I've always done. However when he uses a nice clean one to clean a bit of machinery at work.........

    Hi moanymoany,

There's an earlier thread debating the virtues of tissues versus hankies so I've added your thread to it to keep all the replies together.

We use cotton hankies, because we both suffer from Rudolph syndrome if we use tissues. We have only one drawer for them, and they're all man-sized. I can't see the point in the little lacy things that are soggy if you just dab you eyes with them. I always carry two, as does Mr LW.

We have a very large supply, they get put in a separate bag in the wash-bin and put on their own hot wash (we have an intelligent WM that adjusts the amount of water to the amount of stuff in it), and I don't have a problem dealing with them, as there's only the two of us. If there were others in the household, I might be a bit more circumspect, but I figure if Mr LW and I were going to catch things off each other, we'll do so anyway.

Oh, and Mr LW does the ironing, so no issues of who irons the hankies!:p

Can anyone recommend where to get ladies hankies? Not that I'm precious about man-size but DH has quite a collection of stained hankies (he uses them to mop up anything from wine to tea) and I want nice clean looking ones that I can keep seperate from his. Which unfortunately means they probably need to have something slightly feminine about them. Anyone any suggestions?
