I much prefer a proper hanky when I have the cold, as paper ones tend to give me a giant red nose!
I don't worry about the germs as a)I already have the germs - that's why I have the cold, and b)the cold gets better when your body fights off the germs, so I like to think you can't get the "same" cold twice! (mind, this is just something I made up - I don't have any supporting evidence...)0 -
Sorry but I think the whole idea of hankies is vile. My dad still insists on using them, but he has to hand wash them himself as no-one else will touch them. It makes me cringe when he walks around the place with a grubby one in his hand, then stuffs it back in his pocket and goes to get the teacups out of the cupboard.
Costwise, Sainsbury's Basics tissues at 35p for 150 are excellent - very soft and great value. I know it is not environmentally friendly to plunder the rain forests etc. etc. but there is plenty of environmental damage caused by discharging vast gallons of detergent into the ecosystem too.
As for using cloth hankies when having a cold - I obviously get the wrong sort of colds, as they'd be wringing (and minging) after one blow!
I haven't bogged off yet, and I ain't no babe

I must be an unnatural mother as I never have a hanky or a tissue in my bag when we are out.
I vote for hankies as No 2 daughter gets excema if the skin round her nose gets sore and it doesn't heal all winter. as we walk to school every morning the cold weather always gives her a runny nose and hankies are much gentler (I do manage to remember to put a hankie in her pocket - it's just my own I forget)It doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!0 -
My grandmother used to keep bits of worn old cotton sheets to use when we had a cold. They were really soft and didn't make the nose sore like tissues.
We do use hankies , I don't mind washing and ironing them. DD uses tissues so when she's home from uni I have to remember to check her pockets carefully before doing the washing.0 -
While I like the idea of the money saving when it comes to hankies. I really don't like the thought of washing them. Imagine putting your hand in the washing bin and squelching around when OH has had a cold! Yuk :rotfl:0

Cotton hankies don't seem to make your nose sore the same as tissues do. Hankies all the way for me:)0

very true!
Sionce reading this thread it's made me dig out all the hankies form the drawers and start using them instead of throw away tissues again!0 -
I'm a user of the Sainsbury's Basics tissues, haven't used Hankies since I was very small. My dads a definate Hanky user and soen't keep any tissues in his house.0

I always have a proper handkerchief in my trouser pocket, and a white cotton or silk one in my jacket breast pocket if I'm going to a wedding, funeral etc.
I wash them in hot water with napisan and they always come up clean, though my mother still boils hers in a saucepan.
I can't really understand why people are squeamish about them, but what really annoys me is people who carry neither handkerchiefs nor tissues, and just sneeze/cough everywhere in public.'Never keep up with Joneses. Drag them down to your level. It's cheaper.' Quentin Crisp0 -
Cotton handkerchiefs are perfect for wiping a sweaty brow and don't leave bits like a paper tissue would do........but that's the only time they're used.
I buy cheapy tissues for nose blowing and Kleenex Balsam for colds.
When I have a cold, I save money by blowing my nose into a cheapy tissue, then wipe with the expensive balsam tissue........which is so much softer and prevents a rudolph finish.:D
I know it's being a bit tight but I make the balsam tissues last so much longer this way.;)I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the 'I wanna' and 'In my home' and Health & Beauty'' boards. If you need any help on these boards, do let me know.
