Handkerchiefs vs tissues?

I'm a hanky girl - as our my children - hankies certainly do not shred if left in a pocket! OH is a tissue person. However - it would appear that our DOG is also a hanky sort of Dog and has eaten rather a few of our hankies off the airer. We now have just 5 complete hankies left - and I'm struggling to find some to replace the ones our dog has munched on - any recommendations?
Thanks

Cotton hankies in this house also
They just go in with the normal white wash, unless we have a cold, in which case they go in the "ice cream" tub which the flannels go in (ie, soaked in soda crystals or stardrops) before being washed on a hot wash.
Also, all hankies have to be ironed, makes extra sure that the germs are killed off, the only exception to this is if we've all got a cold and we run out, so sometimes clean and dry will have to suffice!
Have loads of "man" size hankies in this house .... what I'm struggling with is finding "diddy" hankies for DD (aged 3) as she says that the "man" size ones are too big for her ....
Apparently the local market has some .. so tomorrow off I trot to take a lookGC - March 2024 -0 -
My husband is a cotton hankie guy, he has lots of allergies and a constantly runny nose, so it does save us a fortune in tissues.
I don't object to the ironing of them, I can cope with that, I just object to him leaving them in his pants for me to fish out to wash. I remember early on in our relationship pulling a pair of pants out of the washer to hang on the line and feeling the bulge of a hanky in the pocket, I had the not so bright idea that since the hanky had been through the wash it would be fine to pull out, open up and hang out... turned out that its visit through the wash folded had just served to "freshen" and "hydrate" the contents
How I didn't throw up in the laundry basket is still a source of wonder to me.Softstuff- Officially better than 0070 -

My problem too! Can find the big ones for me - but would like smaller ones for my daughter and son - and so also pref. not covered in flowers!"A simple life freely chosen is a source of strength. I had to buy a pretty hankie for my Dd to dance with (Grade 1 ballet- character dance, she has to pretend to be sewing it).
I had never bought one before and wasn't sure where to go or if they were even still available. I tried our big dept store and was directed to the haberdashery dept (lovely old-fashioned word).
I was sure if I'd have to buy several in a box. But I was pleasantly surprised. Not only could I just buy one handkerchief, but they had a large box of assorted designs to chose from, and they weren't wrapped or packaged in any way. I parted with 50p and the saleslady popped it in a little paper bag for me. I only wished I'd been carrying my wicker basket
I'm thinking about stocking up on hankies as my DS1 gets a very sore nose with tissues. I remember my mum ironing my Dad's hankies. She used to say they were one of the few things she enjoyed ironing as they were quick and easy and the iron made such a notiecable difference to them.0 -

Ahhh I remember this happening with my dog!!!! He grew out of it though
I'm definitely a hankie person. Much softer on my poor nose. And you can't blow a hole in cotton as well as you can tissueComping, Clicking & Saving for Change0 -
I love hankerchiefs, they make me feel like I want to pretend to be a heroine in a Jane Austen novel.
Is it just me then?0 -
Neither, I use toilet roll for hankies. Keep it in a fancy cube shaped box I once got in a present so it doesn't look like a loo roll sitting on my coffee table.:rotfl:0

I can't help thinking cotton hankies are very unhygienic.
Do you put them into a container straight after use? Or in your pocket, where it will transfer germs to your hands and everything/everybody you touch?
Especially with a heavy cold I wouldn't use anything other than a good thick (for once not the bargain ones) disposable tissue, preferably with a balm.
Did you know that quite a lot of healthy people carry MRSA up their nose without any symptoms? Easily spread to someone vulnerable.0 -
As I sit here sneezing and throwing away tissues, how many people use cloth hankies?
We are starting to move away from kitchen towel, disposable nappies - as much throw away stuff as possible. How far can this stretch - hankies?0
