Canon EOS 400D Digital SLR with 18-55mm Lens

ive had my 400d for about a year and a half now, and since then, i've spent far too much on lenses.. the ones i use most are:
canon 50mm f1.8. possibly the sharpest lens youll find under £500
canon 28-135IS - perfect all rounder. great in low light due to the image stabilisation feature.
canon 10-22mm - wide angle badboy. i *love* this lens
sigma 80-200mm - cheap long lens. dont use it much, but its handy to have in my bag.
another tip is to buy good quality compactflash cards. i use mostly sandisk extreme 3 and 4 cards. 2gb will be enough for one nights shooting (i do gigs mostly) if i dont use RAW, but if you want to use raw mode, then i suggest a couple of 4gb cards. a couple of spare batteries are always useful too. oh, and a tripod.
next on my list is a flashgun and some white umbrellas.0 -
I bought the Nikon D40 (still doing cashback on this I think) because I could use my old slr lenses with it (though they do not auto-focus). Presumably old Canon lenses (and non-Canon compatibles) will fit the EOS 400D? If you have some decent lenses it could be the time to move up to digital SLR.0

Just get the camera......... you cannot go wrong for that price, the kit lens is fine for a beginner, yes its a little soft, but its not really that rubbish,
you do not have to go out and buy others lenses if you dont want to, only do it if you want to further your interest in photography more otherwise its a very expensive hobby to get in to.
So in a nutshell- grab the bargain, go thru Quidco, use all vouchers you can,and claim the cash back from Canon and most of all.......Enjoy your purchase, get out there and start taking piccies, join flickr and show them off.

Im not entirely sure why i want one, i just do... any opinions? looks like a bargain to me

Everything I do is because it just seems like a good idea at the time.0 -
I picked this up at currys last week, but with the cashback this one works out bout a tenner cheaper. Haven't had much time to play with it, but looking forward to it!
cheapest CF card i found was dvd.co.uk, i was looking for Sandisk Extreme 3, 4Gb - think it was c£19 incl pnp. i actually bought it from amazon coz they have a cheap £10 lowepro case0 -

Just to say my zoom lens's from my old slr canon did not work properly with the 350d nor the 400d - had to buy new ones!
hope this helps

if you can find the body only version, i would use the money saved from the kit lens and get a decent lens.
the f1.8 50mm prime can be picked up for £50-70 new, and you can get the 28-135IS lens for £230ish if you want a nice all-purpose lens.
the kit lens is an ok starting point i guess, but personally, i never use it.
HTH
Actually neither lens makes a good starter lens, as the 400D is an APS-C sensor the focal length is multiplied by 1.6 do the 50 f1.8 is actually an 80mm lens while the 28-135 equates to 45-216 in "35mm" terms, neither will be wide enough for indoor use or group shots (unless you have plenty of space to back away), the suggestion of the 17-70 (which equates to 27-112) is a good one, it's a high quality lens.
But then the 18-55 (28-88) kit lens isn't as bad as most make out, go somewhere like the forums at DPReview.com for some examples, there are many better SLR lenses, but the 18-55 will take better pictures on the 400D than 90% of compact camera woud ever hope to.
for the average user the 18-55 will be all they need, up to 8X10 images you would struggle to tell the difference between a photo taken at f8 on the 18-55 and one taken with the Canon 17-40L lens.====0 -

probably old Sigma?
the early one's were not licenced but reverse-engineered, so there were compatibility problems with most EOS digital SLR's, I have used the 35-70 Canon lens supplied with my EOS 600 (bought around 1989) on my 30D, 40D and 400D and it works fine, as do my Canon 50 f1.8 from around 1990, Canon 35-135 from 1991 and Canon 70-210 from the mid-90's.====0
