It's a good camera at a good price. The lens is bog standard but will probably be more than good enough for your needs if you dont even know why you want it!

Ive owned a Canon 30D for 2 years and am pleased with it. Ive also used my friends 400D. It IS a good camera for the money.

It's an excellent price, particularly when you claim the £45 cashback from Canon on top.

With this kind of camera though, the quality of the picture lies in the lens. This kit has a basic 'kit lens' which will give you ok results and probably a little better than a non-SLR camera. For truly excellent quality pics though, you will need a range of lenses and some of these can cost more than the camera. You would also need a proper flashgun and these are typically £100+. If you are serious about photography then all of this is worth it.

if you can find the body only version, i would use the money saved from the kit lens and get a decent lens.

the f1.8 50mm prime can be picked up for £50-70 new, and you can get the 28-135IS lens for £230ish if you want a nice all-purpose lens.

the kit lens is an ok starting point i guess, but personally, i never use it.

  • I got this camera last christmas for £500, so that's a great price, and it's a really good camera - the lens it comes with is ok, but I got the 75-300mm in New York for £95 (they're about £200 over here) which makes it much better for shooting things further away.
You also have think, as the others have said, about a memory card, and also things like a case - which is about £20.
But seems like a good deal to me, and I'd definitely recommend the camera.

Good spot SD - getting close to giving them away...

Do you need one (no!), but if you want a digi SLR you wouldn't get a much better deal (Olympus 410 is cheaper, but not as good when pushed). Downside as Wanye said is that it's just the start - SLR-land can get expensive quite quickly. If you're not likely to expand your kit, maybe better buying an SLR-like (Fuji, Canon, Panasonic, Olympus etc) which generally have "as big a lens as you need".

For oldie "other" 35mm-ers, the Canon is about the best one to stick your old glass on, Olympus a close second (all to do with distance between lens mount and film/lcd plane - Canon adapters are cheaper than Olympus).

Very wise words indeed. The kit lens is worse than a normal compact camera, I know I have it but NEVER use it. Another lens worth looking at is the Sigma 17-70.
around £200-00. Unfortunatly this pushes up the price of the camera.
    Nice to save.
