I think Abbey ask the question about why you want your money to see if there is any way they can sell you something else. For example, if you say you want it to pay for the holiday of a lifetime, they start thinking about travel money or insurance. I reckon a lot of the information gets passed through to other arms of Abbey.

I really do want to write a letter of complaint to Abbey National, (not just customer services) but to the chief executive, or some such person:rolleyes: The thing is I am unsure of where or who to send it to. I would be very grateful for any help on this.

I am still so angry at the way I was treated, and the last question asked was nothing short of disgusting.

According to Abbey's website, the latest Stock Market announcement was on
26 September 2006 ! (How up-to-date is their site?) That said, "Abbey announces today that the Abbey Board has approved the appointment of Miguel Bragança as Abbey's new Executive Director responsible for Product Marketing, Brand and Customer Relationship Management with immediate effect. "

Perhaps you could try writing to him.

You definatley don't want to get held up with a money laundering problem. Last year my oh wanted to get his ISA money transferred from one account to another in the same bank ~ it took for some reason 5 months. No we weren't laundering money ~ it was a pretty big amount though that we urgently needed to pay as a deposit on a house. It was the banks fault, and eventually we were given £150 compensation for inconvienience but it really caused us a heck of a lot of hassle as we had to raise it another way. The money disappeared out of the account, and just did not arrive where it was requested ~ it took all that time for the bank to say that the money had to be checked for money laundering, even our solicitor could get nowhere with them.

Is it really any wonder that more and more of us are turning to the impersonal banking routes of internet banking, card purchases and ATMs?
If the cashiers are not eyeing you up and down to see if you're a 'crim', then they are trying to sell you stuff you don't want ...

Most banks will allow you to make transfers of up to £25,000 per day via the internet, and you could presumably move it into 20 accounts, each with a cash card and draw £300 (sometimes more) out of each, i.e. £6,000 per day .
You can also get "cash-back" at loads of places, and of course 'spend, spend, spend' on your cards.
So why are the limits as low as £1200 per day at some banks if you turn up in person? Surely that's the last thing any 'real' money launderer would do.
Of course I am as anti-ML as anyone (probably much more so than most), but the whole ML edifice constructed by the banks in respect of cashier/counter operations is a farce ... (I'm sure that their other AML operations are much more sensible.)

AML regulation. Can't provide a specific reference I'm afraid, but I do know it's the one thing a bank cashier can go to jail for through doing their job.

yes, the cashier is gonna go daaaawn for not asking a 70 year old lady what she's spending her £2,500 on

I'd answer any security question with no hesitation, but if I were asked what I wanted the money for, I'd tell them to mind their own bloody business!

If they wouldn't give me MY money because I'd refused to tell them what I want to spend MY money on, I'd go home, log onto internet banking and transfer the whole lot to a family member for safe keeping until I could open another account with another bank, who aren't so bloody nosey.

What's the crack with having to order your money anyway????

It seems that someone else is "absolutely fuming with Abbey" ...
    http://www.independent.co.uk/news/business/news/abbey-fined-16330000-for-silent-calls-799046.html

"This sends an extremely strong signal that unacceptable levels of silent (marketing) calls will not be tolerated because they have the potential to cause significant distress," a spokesman for Ofcom said.

As they fined the multi-million (billion?) pound company £30,000. :(
(Is that the cost of two cashiers for a year?)

You couldn't make it up, could you ... ;)

when NR started to have trouble she went to withdraw her money and they asked *what do you want this money for* she was shy to say "because I am afraid I will lose my money if I leave it here", she said "I am going on holiday".

And of course that sort of thing will happen more and more if people find the questions intrusive. They will simply give the cashier an answer that they are happy to accept - presumably one that is on their script.

Your friend should have asked Northern Rock where they got their money from...
