I recently started working from home and have been getting a number of silent calls. I'm not very patient with them and if there's no real human being there when I say hello I hang up immediately. On the most recent occasion I dialled 1471 and it was the number in this thread.

I was getting incredibly frustrated with this, but now I've read the suggestions for making a noise then leaving the line open, I can't wait for them to ring again! It will serve them right. :T

Anyway, found The Listening Company's website and their published phone number is 020 8484 1000.

We've been getting loads of calls on our landline from 0800 389 6818 over the last week. Never anybody there when I answer the phone. Our phone number has been ex-directory for years and registered with TPS for several years so I don't take kindly to nuisance calls like this. When I googled the number it brought me to this thread and the phone number for The Listening Company.

I checked their website and rang them on the number that was previously provided by robsta and had a blunt conversation with the lady who answered my call. After this she said she would remove my number from their records and the calls will stop within 24 hours.

Well we'll see if she's true to her word, but in the meantime I'm going to report them to TPS, just for good measure!

  • Hello All I have just made contact with the Listening Company and they are a telemarketing company just trying to make a living, I have heard many gripes from many sources but after suffering for a few weeks of drop calls from them I found a solution call them on their land line number in Richmond on 02084841000 and ask to be removed from their caller list. By the way the telephone preference service which we had signed up to does not recognise the number but this really does fix the issue.

If you've ever had any calls form the phone number 08003896818, missed them or didn't bother to answer and wondered who it was, here is the answer. I got a call from the number a few days ago. I answered the call and they were calling on behalf of BT and were trying to sell me a BT Credit Card that could quote "give me big savings on my BT phone bill". As I suspected I would have to use the card to enable these big savings, I declined the offer. I then caled the number on the Caller ID tag to find out who these people were. I recorded the call in Windows. The message goes like this "This is a recorded announcement provided by the Listening Company. We are a marketing agency making calls on behalf of a number of different clients. If you have obtained this number by dialling 1471 then it is most likely that one of our agents or automated dialling equipment has attempted to contact you on their behalf. Should you wish to prevent further Sales and Marketing calls to your number from the Listening Company, please hang up and redial 0800 032 4617, then follow the voice prompts. Thank you." Line then goes dead. What annoys me about these type of calls is that I'm ex-directory so I shouldn't really be receiving them in the first place!

i just had one of these and i was really pleased to find this solution - all sorted now. Like you i'm ex directory too so how did they get my Number!
  • It seems o2 is also using this outsourced telemarketing service as I've just received a sales call from 0800 389 6818, and it was "o2" trying to offer me a "great deal on my mobile".
  • I have had these call every other day from last week - i have now phoned the other number (automated) and removed my number. The only thing is i am registered with the TPS so how did they get my number????

    Thanks
    Helen
  • Reply from the TPS!!!

Many thanks for your complaint regarding the receipt of a "silent call". Silent calls are generated by companies using power or predictive dialling equipment when making outbound calls. A power/predictive dialler is an automated dialler which can store, access and automatically dial telephone numbers which should match operator availability. However some companies may not have set their dialling rate correctly and this means that individuals are receiving calls, where upon answering there is silence.
Although registration with the Telephone Preference service does not stop the receipt of silent calls we will include your complaint in a regular report sent to the Telecommunications Regulator, Ofcom, to enable them to look at trends in complaints being made and where possible identify those companies who are not complying with the regulations surrounding such calls.
If you continue to receive silent calls, please dial 1471 and try to obtain the number that called; you can report the call by completing a TPS complaint form or online at //tpsonline.co.uk . Alternatively you can seek further help and advice regarding Silent Calls from your line service provider.
I trust that the above information is of help to you.

This number phoned me today (9th June 2011 @ 17.28) 08003896818 there was no answer I googled and found this blog..
Then I had another call from 0441616567957 @ 19.58 (the phone rang twice and went dead) I googled that number and found this useful information ..
If you ring 1477 (immediately after you receive it)...it will be registered as a malicious call

    BTW I'm with Talk-talk land-line and O2 Mobile :)

but I just had a call from this number, someone called Darren said that it was about my Alliance and Leicester account, and that he needed to ask some security questions.

I refused to answer any questions and he said I should call the number on the back of my card. Having been scammed back in May, I was obviously concerned but when I called the number, I was told it was no longer available. Well suspicious by now, I called my bank on the normal number only to be told that there were no flags on the account, nothing to worry about. But there is, isn't there?

Have A&L passed my details on to this company? How else do they know I have an A&L account?

I called the bank back to register concern about The Listening Company having too much info on me from (I assume) A&L. What else can I do to make my annoyance known? Any advice please?

Does noone know how this works by now??? Thats the point, they don't know you have an A&L account, you will be one of thousands of people that their system calls automatically. It just so happened that you do. They're not physically calling you personally, their software rings numerous numbers at once one after the other. If there is no answer after x time then they move onto the next number (in a sequence as said earlier like xxxxx1, xxxxx2, xxxxx3 etc.) If there is an answer, then that will RING THEM who will then answer and start selling their crap to you. People have the impression that its someone going through a phone book one page at a time and just ringing everyone but that will be a rarety nowadays unless it is a relatively small company.

The fact that it is a sequence means as soon as you pick the phone up, you will hear a ring (that is calling them as i said earlier), this confirms to you that it is a sales call. Once you know this, just hang up. As its a cycle, they may call you again but generally not for a good long while. Maybe a couple of times over the next few days as it may be flagged that you answered but that will soon stop.
