So mad at OH!!!

Does he go shopping with you - can you get £15 worth of value items etc so that you get a lot of items for the money so he can see exactly what the money would have been better spent on?
My OH can be the same - he doesn't want to be in debt but he works so why shouldn't he spend money he earns, its got to be a question of showing him the alternatives sometimes.0 -

That made me laugh out loud AP - thank you!
HQ - thanks for this, a great tip! My OH is the same - we both earn a decent wage but because we have amounted debts we dont really have much expendable money and it gets on our nerves sometimes, but I keep reminding him it is for the greater good! - I wil try this trick!Kirsty, Taunton, xxx0 -
Had a similar problem myself.
Keep telling dh that we cannot afford the lifestyle we have. He just keeps saying that we do not go out etc. Cannot get it through that 2 cars and a folding camper and weekends away camping are luxuries!!!! Suggested selling the camper and downsizing one car to give us more disposable income. "Don't want to go back to a tent as its like going backwards." I think its better to go backwards than under!!!! He cannot accept that 5 weeks on the sick is going to take a bit of getting over and not just a few weeks!!!!!!!!
The best bargains are priceless!!!!!!!!!! :T :T :T0 -
LOL - at least we sold our folding camper when we needed the cash. However, I think most men are the same. When we were discussing the financial v. car situation a couple of weeks ago, Mr TM deffo couldn't give up his car (he works on a bus route too!!) so I said about buying another reliable car in the nearish future. We haven't got a lot of spare money for HP and I hate hate HATE paying anyone interest.
My idea? Use the money I have saved for our Florida holiday and then put back into that account money you would have paid on a loan. At least that way you are saving again and can miss a payment if needed.
His reply? Nope, not going into the holday fund or we'll never get there. As and when, we'll take out a car loan!!! I know, let's just give a financial institution lots of money anyway and call it 'interest'!! Luckily car is running OK now, so he can drive it until it is a wreck.0 -
Ticklemouse - When I've had situations like yours where someone can't see what to me is obvious, I do the sums and write it out and show them in black & white.
If you do the calculations and can show him in black & white that the extra costs of the car loan will delay the Florida trip by say 6 months he'll find it more difficult to disprove it.
Some people just don't understand figures and time and dates at all, especially when discussed, but when they see a piece of paper that says your holiday will be delayed by 6 months, with the supporting figures they tend to have to admit defeat, admittedly at times begrudgingly!!
Hope this is useful if the car goes wrong again!0 -
My OH is very similar.
Before our hols he said he was afraid Id have to dip into the emergency savings as we needed car tax and we didnt have the money in the bank.
Then when we were on holiday,he pointed out he had £400 for spending  Ofcourse we didnt spend it ! (couldn't think of anyhting to do that cost that much)
When we came back we needed a new fridge so he said well its a good thing we have the emergency savings....needless to say,we didnt use them,we took it out of the £400 still sitting in the bank trying to burn a hole in his pocket.0 -
Don't worry mine is the same. Has got landed with £30 in bank charges as he wrote a cheque to pay for our holiday and then like an idiot he is forgot to transferred the money across to cover it.
Thought he got away with it until today. Got a statement saying they are going to charge him. Rang up to see if they would wave the charge and they told him no as he gone over drawn in january his reply was "Did I"
Like I said that is £30 that could have paid for X and Y. Also told him that was his own fault for not keeping his cash book up todate.
Think he is going to be a bit more careful now.
Ho Hum and there is me trying to make the money go as far as possible. And he has to tax the car next month as well.

Mr TM KNOWS all this, he just chooses not to think about it. In fact I just remembered that last month he took a party of cadets to Fraance for a few days. He was paying for the accommodation on his credit card, so rang them and gave them advance warning, told them it would be about £4k. Then we get the money back. All OK , only it dawned on me the other day that he paid using his MINT card, not his Nationwide card!! I wonder what the horrendous charges are going to be, that WE may have to swallow!! To make matters worse, the whole amount wouldn't go through in one go and he had to put lots of smaller amounts on, so may have even bigger charges. Grrr - took me ages to get him to use Nationwide, but if I'm not on his case - etc etc. Oh well, it's only money - good job we're multi-millionaires (not)0

Oh, it sounds like Apprentice Tycoon's idea of a new use for money trees could be the solution!!0
