Another thing that is useful is a few short lengths of drainpipe leftover from plumbing jobs cut in half and fixed to the roof of a cupboard. This holds rolls of clingwrap, foil, greasproof paper and means they don't take up room on the floor of the cupboard.

Genius!!!! Thanks for this....we are really tight for space in our kitchen so I'm going to do - possibly this weekend.

Also i have two base cupboards that go up against the side of the sink and the side of my larder...they are 2 doors deep but only one door so the back is not easily accessable IYSWIM. any suggestions for how i could make the things in the back/side more accessable?Or what do other people keep in their cupboards like this?I probably haven't explained it well!

I have a couple of cupboards like this in my kitchen. I store my baking trays in one, on their sides. In the other, I have a plastic plant-container - a long shallow one, like you'd use as a window-box. That allows me to slide it in and out easily so I can access what's in the back (and also means anything that spills goes in the container rather than onto the shelf).
  • I am stuck in the house and thought I'd do something useful so have started cleaning the kitchen cupboards. I have also decided it was a good oportunity to list the contents, food wise. So far I've done the baking tray drawer and thrown out 3 rusty tins, what is a good buy roasting/baking tin wise? I've also done the baking supply cupboard and listed the contents and stuck this on the inside of the door. How does everyone else organize their cupboards? I'm so fed up buying stuff only to get home and realise I've already got two or thinking I've already got some in the cupboard and when I get home I haven't.
I am trying to be more organized and just can't seem to get my head round it all. So I thought start at the begining. I'm even going to have a carboot to get rid of all the clutter in the loft. We have decorated all the house and everything that no longer went in the rooms got put in the loft. The loft is now a right mess so thats another job to do while I have a week off work.
Your thoughts and tips would be greatly appreciated

    Weeze x
  • I started doing something similar last week. I've listed everything I've got food wise in the cupboard with the sort of half thought that it will inform my shopping list (!) and that there's actually loads of stuff in there I can make meals from without buying more.

I also found I have a whole cupboard (ok its only a slim cupboard but still) full of carrier bags!

Carbboting or freecycle seems the right way to go for stuff you no longer want. I put stuff in my garage, now the garage needs a clear out.

Learn to love Lock'n'Lock boxes :rotfl:
I really love these and I know a lot of OS'ers use them, they come in all sizes, seal really well and you can see the contents although I still label mine :D

I only buy them on special offer (debenhams quite often have them on sale) like the list on the door idea tho..might pinch that I usually keep a storage book for rotation, but a laminated/wipe clean list inside the cupboard would be good

Good idea - I have lists on the cupboard door - and am doing the decluttering in a different way - as we unpack the boxes anything we don't need/use is going in a big box to take to the charity shop once the boys are back at school. Didn't realise we had so much junk. 13 years of moving around with the army really takes its toll Junk wise!
Me, OH, grown DS, (other DS left home) and Mum (coming up 80!). Considering foster parenting. Hints and tips on saving £ always well received. Xx

March 1st week £80 includes a new dog bed though £63 was food etc for the week.

Use square or oblong boxes for storing stuff - more efficient on space. I use stack-a-boxes from Lakeland (http://www.lakeland.co.uk/stack-a-boxes/F/keyword/stack/product/3033_3031_3029_3030) then print a label for the front with my label maker machine (a bit OCD - I know!)

They are great, go through the dishwasher, freezer etc & are cheap too.

Definitely write your shopping list/meal plan in the kitchen checking you have the ingredients as you go. That way you don't buy what you don't need (and vice versa). Can't find it on their site but I have metal shelf things (like a sort of bridge/platform) from Ikea inside the cupboards so that mugs, glasses, cans etc don't need to be stacked on top of each other. Also have a storecupboard where multiple offers go (keep a list inside that door) so I can 'shop' from there too.
  • I have finished! YEAH! Its only took all day. Decided to do the two freezers and the fridge. I can't believe how many packs of mince I've got and sausages, loads. I'm definately going to try and be more organized with my shopping. I think I'm going to give this meal planning a go, but where do I start? It's difficult when the kids are quite fussy.

Start with stuff you all like (preferably containing mince, since you found so much!). Spag Bol? cottage pie? What else do you all like?
