    Hi

I try and organise my cupboards and try to sort one/two each week(also clean it out, check stock etc)so they are normally all donw out every 4/6 weeks.

I have a cupboard that has a shelf at the top-this I use for breakie cereals, porridge, squash etc. The bottom shelf is strictly for tins-in line order there are soups, beans, spagetti, rice pudding/custard, tinned fruit, tomatoes (chopped & plum)sweetcorn, mushy/garden peas, tuna. My mum always taught me to have one in reserve...but I normally keep 3/4 :o They are either smart price or on offer so only cost pennies and always think, if I have nothing in the freezer, we'll always have food :D

Another cupboard has jams, marmalades, peanut butter, marmite, spices, curry pastes, ketchup, HP, chilli powder, about 4 jars of cooking sauces, biscuits, gravy, salt, pepper, vinegar, etc etc.

    Penny-Pincher!!

im not to sure exactly what you are after labels wise, but my idea is that marker pen will write on sellotape - perhaps you could put a short section of sellotape on the jars and write on it in marker?

or have i got the wrong end of the stick

and if you wanted to add a bit of colour, you could always write on a small piece of coloured paper, and tape that to the jar, or buy different coloured marker pens?

Ive got one of those Argos vegetable wheelie things with 3 baskets in it, I find it useful to have near the cooker, spices and small packets in top, pasta's and rices in the second, and big bags of flour etc in the bottom. It also reminds me when things are nearly empty or need replacing, as I can see them as I walk through the kitchen!

If you don't have a lot of cupboard space and have heaps of freezer space you could also put your flour, rice, etc into that which frees up some more cupboard room. It won't do it any harm.

I use masking tapes for labels. I find this cheap and practical as it usually peals off without leaving a mark. Not as attractive as the the labels from Daxon though. I got some of those free when they had there £5 off and free p&P!

    Slightly OT

I have used Freezer tape (by sellotape) to mark home recorded Video tape boxes. If you use a washable marker pen you can wash off the title of the recording and rename.

Not tried it on DVDs as I am waiting for the prices to drop before buying a machine. lol

All my tins and stuff are ordered into veg/beans/other stuff, all the girlf's baking stuff is on another shelf, and then all the cooking sauces, packs of pasta/rice/etc are on another shelf, we're pretty spoilt for kitchen space considering there's just two of us!

You can get a DVD player for under £20 from Amazon.co.uk, or there were some free ones at comet for signing up to One-Tel (You could cancel straight away). You can't be waiting for them to get any cheaper than that ;)

I keep all my herbs and spices (except for a large jar of dried Mint leaves) in a drawer next to the hob. I also keep my new bags of pulses and bicarb/baking powder etc in there. Quicker and easier to open a drawer and pick up which one I want than to rummage around in the cupboard/box.

My flour/sugar/rice are kept in storage jars if opened or in the bag if not, on the top shelf in my foodcupboard. Pasta (we use alot) and cereals are kept in cereal storage jars (the kind you pour from) with the larger bottles (whiskey, oil, cordial, coke) in a cupboard above the hob/extractor fan. Cans are kept similar items together but are only 1 row high (except for the tuna) as there isn't enough space to stack them.

I keep smaller baking items (icing tubes, cake cases, food colouring) in an open old biscuit tin.

I keep larger items (tins of coffee and storage jars that won't fit in the cupboard) ontop of my cupboards as well as empty jars/bottles I'm saving to put stuff in.

Actually we've just got a new digital camera so I'll take a couple of pics. ;)
