I'm more of a savoury person for cooking, so nearly always opted for buying some frozen sweet things from the likes of Iceland when it came to bbq's.

On saying that, got some guests coming tomorrow afternoon, and have prepared everything for making up a large strawberry tart.
Short crust pastry cooked in a flan dish.
    Made up some creme patisserie.
Only thing that I had to make up a glaze that was suitable was grenadine, so made that up with water, sugar, lemon juice and some cornflour.
Will put it altogether tomorrow, and hopefully it will be ok.

Giant fruit platter - leave individual fruits whole - and multiple bags of supermarket bakery cookies. These are portable, so also a signal to go home! The cookies will go first but hard fruit (apples and pears) in particular may be left behind.

No mess, no fuss and any leftovers last for a while in the fridge.
