My personal view is that they should make it all pay per view. Not only would people not pay for stuff they don't watch it'd also encourage people to get off their backsides and do something more interesting instead.

Imagine what it'd do for the health of the nation if you had to pay for Eastenders!!!

I should not be paying TV licence cause i am only watching satellite programs, but the TV licensing company is bullying me to buy their licence. Does anyone knows what the law says in this situation.

Watch or record live TV = license needs paid.
They say it's genetic, they say he can't help it, they say you can catch it - but sometimes you're born with it

Also note that things like mobile phones need a TV licence if they are used for viewing 'live' TV or it is reasonably believed that the device will be used to watch 'live' TV.

You were making sense up until that last sentence. Reasonably believed? Nonsense. Absolute nonsense. If you don't do it, you don't need a license, no matter what anyone "believes".

It's quite clear Paul. If you are receiving a live broadcast via any means then a TV license is required. However, I do agree that to have to pay the BBC to access another station is nothing short of a rip-off.

in which case she was breaking the law

no sympathy for her - or for anyone else who gets caught
if yo break the law you have to be prepared to take the consequences
But how was she to know he didn't have a TV license. It's akin to sitting in a pub and everyone getting taken to court because the landlord forgot to renew.

Don't hate on me, but I love Eurovision!

I don't have access to live TV except through the internet, which I don't watch as I haven't had a license for about 3 years now. Freeview barely works round where I live anyway, so I wouldn't really even benefit from getting a box to plug into my old TV set - if the TV would even cope with it!

However, the Eurovision website streams the event live. Obviously, this is an international stream, and doesn't have the commentary on it like the BBC broadcast, so it's not exactly the same as what is being broadcast here in the UK.

Do I need a license to watch the stream from that site? It's probably a bit of a rocky one, but was wondering where I might stand on this one...

Firstly, I don't buy any of this "I have a telly and an aerial but don't watch live programmes" nonsense. I feel that if peeps choose to watch 'live' telly then they are morally obliged to pay the fee, regardless of whether you can "get away with it" or wiggle out of it due to a loophole. It's a bit like people who fiddle taxes or claim benefits they are not entitled to. If you owe it then you should pay it!

Secondly, I think that you can only stream programmes over two hours since they were broadcast. As I understand it viewing a programme less than two hours old is regarded as 'live' for which a licence is required. Before it's broadcast is OK too. Just not during the programme or two hours afterwards.

Also note that things like mobile phones need a TV licence if they are used for viewing 'live' TV or it is reasonably believed that the device will be used to watch 'live' TV.
You can view a programme without the need for a TVL as soon as it becomes available on iplayer. This invariably is 30mins to an hour after the live broadcast.
As for watching live TV on your phone how would they enforce that? Do you think they would employ enforcement officers to travel on the train to check if people were watching live TV:rotfl:

Technically yes you would need one as you are watching a programme as it's being transmitted.
Mind you.....who's going to know
Personally, I stopped watching Eurovision when Terry Wogan stopped doing it.

    I couldn't agree more.

Which is one reason I disabled my aerial and removed all the connecting wires from aerial sockets to TV sets before cancelling my licence. Not only does it remove all temptation for me (in just over 2 years there's only been one show I know of that I'd like to have seen), but it also ensures that my son who stays here a couple of nights a week can't hook up to watch anything either ;)

I actually have a lot of friends say that disabling my kit was overkill, but I don't believe it to be so. What's surprised me is the number of 'friends' who think I'm crazy to not watch just because I don't pay

However, a couple of years ago (ish) I watched a theatre awards show broadcast online and was told that because it wasn't being broadcast on TV, I didn't need the license. As that stream isn't technically what's being broadcast on TV... The inages yes, but the audio track is different!
