Which ever you do, it won't stop the endless stream of harassing letters. Letting them in and showing them round might give you some respite for a few months. But they have no legal authority to enter and conduct a search (unless they have a warrant from the courts).

I have had one visit in the last four years, and declined to answer the guy's questions. When he asked to come in, he got a blunt refusal on health & safety grounds as well as lacking suitable protective clothing. The letters still come each month - I don't bother opening them now, and when the pile is big enough, I'll box them up and send them back (at their expense).

Great coming back and seeing this thread is still active.

I'm sure you will have read, best policy, don't let them in. If you answer say nothing relevant or absolutely nothing at all, then they can't (mis)quote you in anyway.

I like the refusual on health and safety grounds, most of the goon's won't have a clue, though it might antagonise the absolute jobsworth goons asking if they have a valid risk assessment and adequate insurance when I claim to have no insurance on the property and dodgy electrics.

I'm planning on telling the idiot i have sick children sleeping. It will take an a** to then knock harder but I'll be ready with a camera not answering them but filming them from another window.
  • Received another threat-o-gram in the post last week with an extra window in the envelope with "14th" circled. Opened it up and it's giving me the opportunity (nice of them) to get licensed before the 14th September wise they will send the heavies round.

It just assumes that I watch live TV broadcasts without question.

They are masters of threats that can be explained away - though I can't honestly see the point of that. Not only that, but it's astoundingly patronising.

So their letters talk about being "correctly Licensed" - meaning that you have a Licence if you need one, not if you don't.

I don't even bother opening them. When a new one comes through the letterbox, it just get chucked on the growing pile.
Her courage will change the world.

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.

    Hi All

I am looking for some help by means of confirmation and maybe joining me in a complaint.

Now I hate Capita and their TV Licence goon squad, but I also hate the other parts of Capita that you may not be so aware of, the ones that prevent newly qualified GP's or Dentists start work because of delays at Crapita.

Capital also manage databases for hundreds of organisations, from share registers to the DWP, I have seen reports in the past of them not respecting the Chinese Walls of these databases and using them to gather more data.

Although I have not had need of a licence for many years, I have had a few "confrontations" with TVL goons, with them obtaining access to premises under false pretexts.

So the other day I found that Capita had added my name to their database, as it happens, it is to my last address where they apparently have me as a "no tv licence needed".

Now I have never given them my name, so I called them up and asked them to tell me how they obtained my name and who created this No TV record.

They told me when the record was created and they alleged it was done over the Internet.

I know this to be nonsense as I did not even have internet access at that time and I would never be so stupid as to give them my data and I would never complete the NoTV form either.

I am going to do a subject access request and request more data, what I would like your help with is to let me know if this has happened to you (PM me if you do not want to post on the forum).

I am wondering if the TVL goon perhaps created the NoTV needed record but he never had my name, I guess it is possible they got that from another database.

If any of you have found that Capita have obtained your personal data, can you also post to let us know if you called them to ask them to provide the source of their data (Data Protection Request)?

    Thanks in Advance

Usually I just rip them up unopened and straight into the bin, but seeing as it had been a while I thought I'd see what this one was about. :)

Capita manage my company pension scheme, but they have never put two and two together as the TVL letters still always have "Legal Occupier" as the name.

Now I have never given them my name...

They have recently (in the past year) contracted with a database marketing company called Acxiom to obtain Name details for addresses from apparently opted-in marketing sources.

Obviously, this should not then appear on a No-Licence Needed entry without your consent, but that could be the original source.
  • I cannot find an answer to this one. I have cancelled my TV licence because I just don't watch live TV any more (or BBC catchup). However my question is, if I take my laptop to a friends house who has tv licence, can I watch a catchup programme on my laptop at their house?

Yes. The Licence (generally) applies to a place, not a person. So your friend's Licence covers his/her family and any guests.

In the case of on-demand content, it is the act of streaming/downloading that is licenceable. So, you can download iPlayer content at your friend's house, and are then free to watch it anywhere.
