My dad did it sometime last year, he said a few people got sent home straight away as the lawyers didn't like the look of them etc, and the whole thing was finished in the afternoon anyway.

I wouldn't mind a shot at it, it's something different to do and you're getting paid for it!

I loved doing Jury Service! When I first got my call up papers I was bricking it but once you are there its very interesting.

Anyway.....on your first day you are all taken to a room and everyone is asked if there are any legitimate reasons why they can't do the service. Thats when you explain why you feel you can't be there. They are very good and will listen to your reasons without making you feel daft.

If you work for a district council or LA they will normally pay you and recoup the expenses the court pays. You are lucky, you will most likely get your normal wages -if you work for private employers or miss out on freelance work there is a much higher likelyhood you will be worse off.

It was quite awhile ago when I done Jury Service but IIRC the courts paid me for the times I was there and If I had any days off from Jury, I went into work and they (work) paid me.
I understand you being annoyed at losing money, I would be too but I was ok as I was only on minimum wage so didn't lose anything.
Also if its the same now as it was then you fill in a time sheet thingy and they pay you from the minute you leave your house until the minute you get back in.

Thank you, its a relief also to know its not so early every morning. I get up at 6 ish anyway, but I'm a bit slow in the mornings & would have to get up at 5 if I had to get the train that gets me there at 8. If I''m not needed till 10, I can get the one that gets me there at nine ish.

I work for Surrey county council.

Good night, sorry for being miserable & grumpy about it. Can't pretend I'm happy but I suspose I got to do it.
  • yeah, its not that bad. I missed out on some freelance work I do which pays well, but there were builders and people there who were missing out on well paid contracts. Everyone is in the same boat.

£60 is a very healthy sum of money for the chance to do something completely different for once (you probably won't get this oppertunity again), and IMO it is also your duty to society, being a british citizen.
