  • Hi.

we've noticed some posts about the site speed. Whilst we know we are peeking on tip day and radio 2 day. It shouldn't be slow at other times.

Please can you note when you find it slow? Whether it's the main or the chat site? How slow it is (how many seconds for a page to load) and what you were doing

This would be a great help

I rasied a vent topic sugesting people stop putting single line posts replying saying 'thanks' or 'yummy, will get one for my hubbys stocking' but I was castigated in the extreme.

I am a DBA working on a well known public site, and trust me, such practices are hitting your sites performance.

You certainly were catigated Rufas and still are by the very same people who are quick enough to say we should all be nice to other moneysavers. I just read that thread this morning and I certainly don't think anyone is being very nice to you, especially when you posted on The VENT board.

All very amusing to them I am sure but such a waste of time and no thought given to the original poster who is entitled to his opinion.

It's always pretty sluggish for me (during the day).

Is it to do with bandwidth? I've noticed that many peoples avatars and signatures are huge - I've just seen one at 229kb!! This is going to murder dial up users.

Maybe a temporary removal of all signatures and avatars to see if that improves things for people, and if so, enforce a kb limit on them, say 8k.
  • Hi everyone,

Many thanks for posting your feedback, it's always valuable and useful for us to see.

It's also great to see some technical suggestions for improving the site. As a completely free service, it must be obvious to you all that we just don't have the resources to make all the improvements we'd like to. Thanks particularly to Loafer for some useful observations. We've looked at using Squid before and perhaps it's time to review that option.

Saying that, last night we upgraded the bandwidth on the Chat Forums (we were maxing out at 5 Mbps) so I'm interested to hear from you guys if you've seen an improvement since yesterday. It will only really affect the busy times but hopefully, it should be noticeable.

    Cheers,

    Webby
  • I have complained the past about signatures etc when I was on dial-up because it took forever for a page to show up due to pictures, signatures, scrolling posts and rows and rows of smillies etc.

Not so bad now I am on broadband but if the above were kept to a designated area then dial up users would be aware that if would take more time to read those threads.

Also some signatures are so big, you can't find the post!

I doubt it, such posts are just a blip in an index with the proper technology at hand.

probably not the right board, but what proper technology did you have in mind. I'll not play my cards just yet.
