there was a prog on BBC (?) a few months back about the bacteria growing in Brita filters, they recommended keeping the water jug in the fridge to delay bacterial growth.
it rather put me off, as don't like drinking chilled water, and it's heavy to lift the Brita jug.

tesco sometimes has the pack of 6 brita filters on for £15 - useful to making an online food order up to amount to trigger discount code:cool:
    ditto Amazon for free P+P

Remember you can be 'too clean' :D

I never keep my filter in the fridge - can't drink cold drinks myself. In my last house I found that where I used to keep it, it caught the sun so the filter did start getting green algae in it  Lots of hot water and bleach and new filter and kept it in the shade :) Now, I just clean it out every so often - either in the DW or scrub it by hand. It also stays in a cool dark corner of the kitchen. I've never made myself ill from using water from a filter and I'm not going to worry about it now.

I've also heard things about bacteria and bottled water.

    Hi Mr Proctalgia
do you have a plumbed in RO system?
I've wondered about getting one, but the water flow from the filter tap seems to be a mere dribble and it'd take ages to fill the kettle.

Mine is a plumbed in system with a booster pump, it can make a hundred gallons a day apparently, it actually makes about 70, so spends most of its time off. The trick is to use a storage vessel and separate tap, then you will always have enough. I use the "waste water" to keep the garden going.

    Have a look at these.

I have looked around a lot and this guy is fairly cheap, there are also lots on eBay

living with tr3mor :) so yes brita filter!

We got ours from woolworths when they were reduced lots.. :) £7 with 2 filters :) worth every penny..

Water in halls last year was undrinkable - through the brita and it was nice :) sometimes i'd even do it twice because it was that bad.. (used to come out the tap a kinda white/grey colour and stinks of chlorine!)

If you use the water fast enough it won't have time to grow too much bacteria - keep it out of the sun and it will be fine :)

    Better than bottled anyway! :)

Thanks, I'll have a look in Woolworth see if they have any cheap ones in there and other good places to buy them from?

For those interested, Costco do 6 Brita filters for £12.62 (can't remember exact pence) They may also do the Starter pack Argos are doing but I didn't investigate it closely as don't need another jug. I do remember it was less than £40 and still had 1 free filter, so could very well be the same offer.
