In my case, I drink tap water, so the water filter jug was an mistake for me.

In our case, yes, as you say it becomes a gadget that's never used.
We found no difference in the taste of the water, or of tea or coffee etc that you made with it, just that you had another gadget to clean regularly (and if you don't, it turns green with algae), not to mention the expense of the cartridges.
We threw it away a couple of years ago.0 -
I have to admit than when DS3 wanted me to buy one several years ago, sceptic that I am, I didn't think it would make any difference. I also was quite happy with our tap water's taste. But I bought one under protest, and now I'd never go back. The water tastes *clean* and now I'm aware of the chlorine taste of what comes out of the tap.
Maybe it depends on where you live and the hardness or otherwise of the waterThere are some very cheap ones around, so could be well worth the gamble.
You never get a second chance to make a first impression.0 -
I've had a Brita filter jug for years and I wouldn't go back to normal tap water, especially for tea making as I find the tea tastes much better if made with filtered water.Be careful who you open up to. Today it's ears, tomorrow it's mouth.0

We drink bottled water and also use it for diluting juice etc and have filtered water for using in the kettle.
Lidl are selling a filter jug at the moment for about £5 ish and also universal cartridges which are £5.99 for a pack of 4.I have the mind of a criminal genius. I keep it in the freezer next to Mother....0 -
It does indeed depend on the quality of the water where you live - if we had good tap water I wouldn't bother. Bottled water is not so great for the environment - think manufacture and disposal of plastic bottles, transport costs etc. Filters are better, especially when you have somewhere to hand the used filters in for recycling.
We have now moved on to a porcelain filter directly connected to the mains, which dispenses the filtered water from a separate little tap. This filter only needs replacing once a year. Where we are - in rural France - there are problems with the local water because of a high-ish concentration of herbicides/pesticides. The water comes from a local spring, which sounds idyllic, but isn't because of all the 'high-tech' farming around! By law they have to regularly publish a detailed analysis of the water, so you know the quality of what you are drinking. Therefore for us the filter really is important."Remember that many of the things you have now you could once only dream of" - Epicurus0 -

I drink bottled water when I go out, I reuse a glass bottle and fizz my own water with my old Soda Stream, I always try to have a bottle with me when I go out, especially in summer.KEEP CALM AND keep taking the tablets :cool2:0 -
We have fairly hard water, and if we don't use a filter we end up with the kettle coated in limescale. Tea also gets a sort of a "scum" on the top which doesn't happen with the filter either. If I drink water though it's usually straight from the tap - I can't say I've noticed any problem with the taste. I certainly wouldn;t want to be without the filter now. We wouldn't be without ours as the water tastes awful here. Also, looking at the amount of brown stuff that collects on our shower curtain etc, I wouldn't want to drink it. I also use it in the kettle/coffee maker etc so they don't get clogged.
