Sorry to dismiss this - but cheap toothbrushes for sensitive teeth can be a false economy.

The better toothbrushes have bristles with a much rounder end profile. The cheaper ones, under magnification, look like little needles with very sharp ends.

These bristle ends can, over time, damage the very fragile tissue of the gum around the teeth, and this will cause some recession, which ultimately will make the sensitivity worse.

Look around and buy good brushes cheaply, by all means, but avoid unbranded cheapo toothbrushes - or toothbrushes made by people more famous for their plastic kitchen products than oral health.

As to the Forever Living toothpaste, I have had patients with various problems who find it very good. Dry Mouths and persistant oral ulceration being the two main ones.

I think this is probably due to it being SLS free, which can irritate a small %age of the population.

My worry about the Forever Living toothpaste is that it is also Fluoride free - which I feel is a case of throwing out the babay with the bathwater! People with dry mouths are very prone to decay, and really they need all the help from flouride that they can get.

I don't think flouride free would be of much help to anyone with just sensitivity either.
    How to find a dentist.
    1. Get recommendations from friends/family/neighbours/etc.
    2. Once you have a short-list, VISIT the practices - dont just phone. Go on the pretext of getting a Practice Leaflet.
    3. Assess the helpfulness of the staff and the level of the facilities.
    4. Only book initial appointment when you find a place you are happy with.

Thanks Toothsmith! I have started using a Boots sensitive toothbrush last night, and I must say it doesn't feel quite as nice to use as the Sensodyne ones (cheaper though). I may go back to using the Sensodyne ones anyway. I have realised that I do brush quite hard as well - I have to consciously think about it to brush more gently. I am increasing the time I spend brushing as suggested, and it seems to be working well - I hadn't realised quite how brief my brushing sessions had become, again it is worth thinking about instead of just doing it on autopilot.

I am okay with the Sensodyne toothpaste so will continue to use that - it really does reduce sensitivity brilliantly.

Great to have so many useful replies - many thanks to all!

I have sensitive teeth and invested in a sonix toothbrush (when they were half price in boots) and to be honest it has done wonders for my teeth and gums.

Because it cleans up to the gum line every day it has made a huge difference, and you only need to replace the heads every 6-8 weeks. I found that when they did a thorough clean of my teeth, I couldnt eat for 2 days because my gums would be that bloody and swollen, so no you are not being a wuss!!

Thanks for the tip about the aloe vera though - heading off to get some of that now!

Before I start can I please ask for no posts bashing me for being a smoker and telling me to quit. I have tried many times to try and quit, but unfortunately as yet have not managed to.

The problem is that because of the smoking I get stains on my teeth. I hate the stains and have tried various different toothpastes claiming to whiten teeth and remove stains etc and none seem to be very good. I use an electric toothbrush btw.

Can anyone recommend a good toothpaste for shifting the dreaded smoking stains. I'm prepared to spend money on a toothpaste if it actually works. I'm not a particularly heavy smoker as I tend to smoke approx 12 a day. But still the stains build up.

When I was a 30 a day smoker:eek: , I used Remberant (about £8 in Boots), I used a plain cheap toothpaste first then a pea sized amount of Rem as a second brush. I also used (& still use) a sonic toothbrush & flossed (still do).

I used to get it polished off every 6 months by the Dentist.

Now I've stopped smoking its no longer a problem:D
