Price of heating oil

I feel a TV investigation programme coming on...
Martin? :money:
I'd welcome Martin (or anyone come to that!) investigating it, there are simply too many of us running out far sooner than normal, people who've had oil for some years and are well aware of their usual useage!

None of you guys have Price Protection? We have Price Protection over here. So if you go to your dealer you'll get the same price no matter what fluctuation occurs. Plus, how old is your equipment. The new equipment out there burns less oil therefore reducing costs and they are easier to maintain than some of the older stuff out there right now.0

I've just been chatting with the chap servicing our boiler. He's convinced that something in the oil has changed (but doesn't know what). He said that the number of people who have unexpectedly run out of oil has increased massively - i.e they're burning more fuel than normal. He said people with oil fired argas are having a really bad time of it too. I know nothing about argas but apparently they should be checked for carbon build up every 6 months. He's finding carbon is building up every 4 - 6 weeks and its so thick he has to use a chisel to get it off. Perhaps someone who knows or understands the oil industry can explain what has changed in the oil and why.
A lot of companies are adding a additive to there oil now, that is to be cleaner burning & last longer, but is not supposed to be used where you have an aga, maybe that is the answer.if i had known then what i know now0 -
I just ordered 500 litres a couple of days ago as we are having our new boiler installed and I rang round and got GOFF down to 54.30ppl (+tax). When we last got some 2 years ago it was 32ppl  (but will still hopefully work out cheaper than using 3KW fan heaters!)
Your taking your chance having goff oil:eek:if i had known then what i know now0 -

Price protection....I wish! Ours doesn't 'fluctuate', it rockets, skywards, up 12p per litre in last 8 weeks! My boiler is only 3 years old and regularly serviced.Make the most of life, it is not a rehearsal!0 -

They might well be adding 'something' but it sure as hell ain't making it last longer, its making it burn substantially quicker than it ever used to!Make the most of life, it is not a rehearsal!0 -
Oh no - I just ran out today!
5 1/2 months for 1000 litres is worse than usual - normally expect 6 months.
Luckily my tigerloop copes with us running dry so no charges to bleed air out
Price was a real shock - 52.95p plus VAT a litre !!
When we first got our oil boiler years ago it was around 16p....0 -
Wish I'd struck a deal when I first started buying about 10 years ago.... it was 7p a litre then! Now I negotiate with everyone who delivers to this area and go back to my regular supplier who always either price matches or goes below - this can save us £10-£20. I think the earlier poster who mentioned additives in the oil / quality of oil is on the right track as to why we're all using so much more than usual. I seem to remember that the boilerman mentioned something about Shell being the only oil company that doesn't mix their oil with other producers and therefore is better quality. Still, I would really like to know what's changed recently to affect the increase in the amount of oil we're using.0
