Price of heating oil

  • 55p/l OUCH:eek:

I'm trying to eek out the last 400 litres that are in the tank....I'm hoping prices will fall a bit at least....the tank holds 1800l (1800x 55p = £990!!! )

I run a Aga/Rayburn -and its not too inefficient. But for heating I have been shutting all the doors and curtains and using my wood burning stove as I manged to get a load of logs FOC. I also got a grant for cavity wall insulation and loft insulation which has also helped reduce the overall costs.

As well as oil, logs are going up here too. The latest is £50 a load of seasoned logs.

I've just been chatting with the chap servicing our boiler. He's convinced that something in the oil has changed (but doesn't know what). He said that the number of people who have unexpectedly run out of oil has increased massively - i.e they're burning more fuel than normal. He said people with oil fired argas are having a really bad time of it too. I know nothing about argas but apparently they should be checked for carbon build up every 6 months. He's finding carbon is building up every 4 - 6 weeks and its so thick he has to use a chisel to get it off. Perhaps someone who knows or understands the oil industry can explain what has changed in the oil and why.

Interesting comment, I wonder too, so many people I know have run out far sooner than expected (and it isn't becasue its being stolen, which is happening more and more often according to the news) I just went to order another 500 litres as I'm nearly out, last 500 brought only 8 weeks ago, and I've had to refuse it, its now a fraction over 60p a litre, gone up 12p a litre in 8 weeks (thats some £7 extra a week) its ridiculous and I've had to say no, this has to stop, and am going to have to manage with 2 or 3 oil fired radiators :(

I just ordered 500 litres a couple of days ago as we are having our new boiler installed and I rang round and got GOFF down to 54.30ppl (+tax). When we last got some 2 years ago it was 32ppl  (but will still hopefully work out cheaper than using 3KW fan heaters!)
  • very interesting indeed!

I have had a few calls recently from local residents and farmers, asking if I had noticed anything strange about my oil consumption. It seems that we all have suddenly run out at various times, despite personally being on a top-up scheme. (I was compensated by the supplier)

Ours for one hasn't been stolen, but something is certainly a little odd. Our AGA also has moments when I'm sure it's not burning oil that well. I have posted on another thread about my whopping £1000 a month oil bill, and Archie Kidd from Kidd boilers (apparently he wrote the book on the things!) is coming to my home next week and I shall certainly ask him his views.

I *really* think this needs to be looked into but by whom and how?

The only way I can think of is if someone had some old oil and could compare it to the burning rate of new oil, I am convinced something has changed about the oil, everyone seems to be saying they have run out sooner than expected and after a fairly mild winter that should not be, I personally have just got through nearly 500 litres in a little over 8 weeks, the previous 500 litres lasted just 10 weeks, this time I was mega frugal with it, stat on 18 most of the time, hot water switched off after the last shower in the morning so if anything mine *should* have lasted longer as the ambient temperature outside was overall the same throughout the whole period. My boiler has just been serviced so no problem there and I have no leaks in the tank *something * is wrong somewhere.....!

It's not just in the UK. In New England, USA (where they have had a cold winter), I have heard exactly the same story. When my other half asked the local oil supplier the response was, "Oh, yes, everyone's saying that, but it's just because we've had such a cold winter and people are running out sooner than they'd expected.'

I wonder what the truth is?
