    ...and happy that I did!

    Broadband was £24.99 - now £12.50 (for 3 months)
Phone services was £28.75 - now £20.00 (for 1 year)

Saving £21.24 per month=£255 per year (as long as I remember to renew after 3 months.

    Result!

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this as it's labelled NTL but thought I'd share my Telewest experience from this afternoon.
I phoned Telewest to cancel my TV subscription - they're doing a special offer for new customers and when I asked last week about offers for existing customers I was told there was nothing they could do as special offers only for new customers. Anyway, I decided to buy a Freeview box as I only have the basic £5.50 p/m TV package and cancel the TV through Telewest. When I got through to customer service, they've offered to move by cable box to another TV in the house free of charge and give me basic TV package free for next 6 months - an offer I couldn't refuse!
If only they'd offered me that last week before I bought the Freeview box...
    PS - the customer service number is 0800 073 0591 (option 3)
  • Just called NTL.
Was paying £17.99 broadband and £10.50 telephone line rental.
Without much hassle got broadband reduced to £9.99 a month for a year and telephone line rental at half price £5.25 a month again for a year.
Thanks to all on this website will save £159 a year.
  • A word of advance warning to anyone thinking of reducing their ntl: bill by threatening to stop one of their services. Anyone stopping one of their services (e.g. stop the tv but retain the phone) could be hit by cancellation charges in future:
Q:I would like to remove one of my services, what will happen?

A: There will be an administration fee of £4 for each service you would like to remove from your subscription. For example, if you have all 3 services from ntl and you would like to remove 2 of them you will be charged £8.

These charges will become effective on 1st April 2006 and will appear as "Service Downgrade" on your bill.

I'm sure you've taken care of this, but to ensure that there's no misunderstanding, you can't make a call to the emergency services using VOIP through your computer if there's a power cut. Nor can you use a cordless handset.

EVERYONE should ensure that they have either a traditional telephone connected to a land line, or a fully working mobile, just in case there's a need to make that call.

    Safety first, money-saving second.
  • Well done Alvleigh. I'm hoping to be able to do the same as you....what exactly did you say to them to get the reductions? I'm useless at this...get tongue tied, so any pointers would be most appreciated!

I recently changed my mom, from just ntl phone calls (no deals at all with this) she was paying about £30 month inc. calls. So a month ago I changed her to this 3 for 1 deal, digital tv, broadband, and telephone - free local calls in the evening for about £32.99 per month, sounds spraight forward!, I double, even triple checked the price, and what the forthcomming bills would be and was told several times around £40 inc. day phone calls. Imagine my Moms surprise when she gets a bill for over £80, I was fuming, as I was the one that encouraged her to change, after numerous phone calls talking to severel different operators (who will give you there first name but sorry not their last one) was informed that my mom is actually paying one month in advance a patherically hight amound for part month etc, they will graciously refund her about £8 and let her have the digital package for 1/2 price for the next 12 months, so she SHOULD work out ok, but I am so angry that a bill can be so off the mark. Apparently it is just this first bill (though my own one was ok) I just get really mad because I get different answers etc from different operators, there does not seem to be any standard guidelines. Well I have had a good moan now and have decided that if March's bill is again way too high, they can have all their ntl stuff back and we shall go freeview, tiscalli for broadband and back to good old bt!!

    Here's another one to try...

I decided to switch from NTL to BT (plus 1899 etc.) because I make quite a few daytime calls and 1899 now costs 1p/minute via NTL. Phoned BT, spoke to nice lady, went through the process, all OK.

Two days later, got a call from NTL -- "Why are you switching to BT?" I explained why (and the NTL chap said he uses 1899 too, so he understood). He then said, "Will you stay with us if we give you unlimited UK landline calls for free?" "Yes," I said, so now I'm £14-50 per month better off.

(Actually, that's not quite true, as I had earlier got free evening and weekend calls, worth £6 per month, for free, so actually I'm sort of £8-50 better off. Though I was spending less than £8-50 with 1899, but anyway, you get the drift...)

Got a leaflet through the post from ntl that stated existing customers could ring up to find out if they were eligible for any deals.
I rang this morning and told them about this leaflet, asking what they could do for me. I have the base pack for the telly, 1mg unlimited broadband and talk 24 for the phone. The guy said that because I had all 3 packages he could give me a discount of £8 a month, saving me £96 a year. This offer was not for a limited period either.
I think if you just ring up and be blatant about asking for a better deal, they will try and accomodate.
It should be worth a try!! :j

  • I have just looked at my latest NTL bill and am paying
    £14 TV & telephone service
    £5 TV Mid Pack
£9.99 unlimited 1Mb( shows on the bill as £8 discount on the standard £17.99)

I have recently negotiated the broadband reduction (lasts 6 months)
but wonder if anyone else is paying less for the other two elements of this package and is willing to give me negotiating ammunition!!!??? ;)
