i have also listened to my landlady slag me off to her friend very publically in hospital when i was in the next bed - ok my standing order did not go out at the revised rent amount but she gave us 48 hrs notice and i had been hospitalised for a week!! it was all i could do to stop my mum having a go at her!!! i did not know that the rent had increased, she pointed acussingly at me and i called a nurse and asked her to drawer the curtains. we listened to her 1/2 hour rant about how crap i was!!

Interesting thread. I'm not familiar with the English tenancy laws and agreements. I wouldn't worry too much though, the LL sounds a tad unhinged, but if going down the road of writing a letter and you like living in the flat just make sure it's worded carefully.

I rent a house to a friend (not the best arrangement) who went and got a Jack Russell, throws the odd party, hangs things on the new skimmed walls which I don't particulary like, but wouldn't kick up a head of steam. As long as it's returned in the same condition as when he moved in I wouldn't be allowed to keep his deposit. However if he were to change locks (without my permission) and not give me a key he would be served 6 month notice at earliest opportunity.

Hi clutton, it's just in our agreement and that wouldn't be unreasonable to me as such. Not long after the house was first rented, the previous owner still had keys handed out and the door was twice opened in the middle of the night, which was a real worry. I paid for new locks and got a set which worked out okay, as the friend actually lost. Would never dream of just walking in and snooping around, it is just for emergencies. The OP has got some advise wrt changing locks. I reckon they should talk to the LL, explain the visit is not convenient, the frequency impractical and someone will be there when she comes round maybe every 6 months, before trying anything drastic. I mean if the lady is that pernickety about cushions....

Peace... I'm not one of them :)
