NIS 2007 is on desktop B, plus ZA Pro.

I have AVG free version on this laptop, plus ZA Pro.

    But...

    OH MY GOD!

    It worked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :j

Both Norton and Zone Alarm Pro are disabled, but I don't think it's ZA that's the problem.

If I turn Norton back on, I guess it won't work any more? Is there some way to tell it that it's OK to accept communication from this laptop?

Thanks so much for your help, by the way!

Are you saying you have Norton (with firewall) running alongside ZA firewall?

If so, I'd say this was causing conflicts, not recommended.

Shall I turn off the Norton firewall permanently, as I have ZA? (I didn't even know there was a firewall in Norton...)
  • The router will be running a DHCP service (it supplies an ip address to each pc) Each pc in turn requests an ip address. Make sure the network prorerties are set to automatic. In Internet Protocol Properties make sure the radio button "Obtain an IP address automatically is on.

Check this for all pcs and reboot to make sure.

ypou should not have 2 firewalls running on 1 pc... i would totally ditch norton.. use zonealarm as ya firewall and then get avg free as anti virus...

norton is a well known resource hog and is known to be not very user friendly...

I'm losing the will to live

After it working, and then not working etc. etc. etc., I decided to uninstall Norton on the desktop, and install AVG. That's all done.

I deleted the printer from this laptop, and thought I'd start all over again.

I can ping the desktop with no problem.

But I can no longer add the printer, even with ZA and AVG turned off.

When I tried, it says Windows Cannot Connect to the Printer, blah blah blah.

And on the desktop, when ZA was turned on, there was an alert which said 'The firewall has blocked internet access to your computer (NetBios name) from 192.168.0.2 UDP Port 2063'. And another time it was similar but it said NetBios Session TCP Port 1128.

Yet it didn't seem as though ZA was the problem - and I can't add the printer even when ZA is shut down!

Thank you so much for your help so far. If you can bear to help again I'd be grateful.

    Confused of Berkshire
  • just to double check, is the desktop B ip addy still 192.168.0.3..

if so, then try above solution

Yes, the IP address is still the same.

I did what you said, Al Mac, and it worked perfectly.

Until I rebooted both machines, and now there's an error message which says 'Printing failed when starting the document'.

Sort of off topic, but your wireless is encrypted isn't it (preferably with wpa-psk/tkip), otherwise when you get it working, you may end up sharing files/printer with the neighbours.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

No, it isn't and I know it should be.

    I'll sort that out...

...when I get around to it :(

Regarding the printing problem, it's almost as though something is resetting itself when I restart the computers. What could that be? Surely not the IP addresses as they are static, aren't they? The 192.168.02 and 03.

    God, I hate computers!

You can setup an address reservation in the router, to make sure you get a static ip, under lan ip setup, you just tell it each pc's mac address, much better than setting static ip's

    start, run, cmd

    ipconfig

    ipconfig /all

I'd sort out encryption first, if someone connects with a wormed pc while you have firewalls disabled, you'll end up with more problems than you have now

    using any wired pc,

    www.routerlogin.com

    admin
    password

    wireless settings

change the ssid to a random word

    select WPA-PSK (Wi-Fi Protected Access Pre-Shared Key)

    enter a password into

    WPA-PSK Security Encryption Network Key (8 ~ 63 characters)

    click apply

router is now secure, then you just tell any wireless pcs what the password is when you connect, and set it to autoconnect when in range
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?
