:( that is terrible, I dont know how they can be so cheeky! I would ring them or write a letter asking for the cash back. If they are cheeky enough to TELL you about the car then I'd feel totally within my right to ask for the money back. If you lose the friendship then they werent real friends in the first place and its there fault that it happened because you should not treat friends in that way.

Well to be fair, apparently they got the car free from a friend who buys old cars and refurbishes them. But they've had it steam cleaned, taken out insurance, pay for petrol etc. I guess it wouldn't have cost them £1000 but whatever - they should have returned the money first in my opinion. OH has promised to text them in January and ask for the money back. If they plead poverty, we'll ask them to give us as much as they can and set up a standing order every month until they've paid it off. Because friends and family know we're saving for a house, they know we've got a fairly good amount in the bank. So they feel free to ask us and OH is a soft touch. I think this has given him a wake up call though so....silver lining. :)

Hope all of you have a super New Year's Eve. OH is working so I will be AQAing - extra pay from them to work NY Eve!

Luckily not yet! We both feel fairly safe at the mo.. even though OH's company has made 120 odd redundant in his office! We are going to increase our 'safety net' fund from 3 months salary to 6 months. We have nearly reached our target of 100K!! just a few grand short. We should be there next month.

Also I'm hoping to reduce my hours next year to 30 instead of 37.5, as a nurse I earn a piffely little wage anyway so it won't make too much difference to the savings fund. We are going to try and reduce our spending for 2009 . This includes our food spending as we currently spend around £100 a week for the two of us. I got a slow cooker for christmas so I'll be doing batches and freezing. I've been looking at the old style board and there are some great ideas on there. I might even join one of the challengges!

    HAPPY NEW YEAR:beer:

ive just sat down and gone through my figures.

sig updated; deposit currently £19789.65, will hit the £20k target at the end of the month.

its hard to make too many plans what with not knowing what state the economy is going to be in in 9 months, but according to my current projections we should have around 5k extra in the kitty when we come to buy to either cover fees etc or top up the deposit.

I'm going to have a play around with our budget on MS Money (or go into geek mode as my OH kindly puts it!) to see what's realistic for this year. We really haven't made a great deal of progress towards our target (£20k) over the last few months, but with a new baby there have been all sorts of extra costs that I didn't really budget for beforehand. I *think* I'm back on top of it now, though! I'd say my job is pretty safe, and OH is staying at home to look after the little one for a while, so we know we can manage on one salary ok.

Even though we haven't made all that much progress savings-wise, our deposit as it stands is effectively growing as house prices fall, so I suppose that's just as good. We're considering going to speak to a mortgage adviser at the end of the month when I've got some time off work, though it's only likely to be a general discussion rather than any kind of serious talk.

Butterfly72 - well done on nearly hitting your target, that's amazing!

    Happy New Year, everyone!

    Hi all,

I thought this looked like an appropriate thread for me to join. See my signatue. My girlfriend and I are saving for a deposit and hopefully have a few quid to start us up - I am not afraid of having to put a kitchen or bathroom in etc - if the house price itself is right!

Just thought I would say hi!
