So it's all your fault then!.;)Anger ruins joy, it steals the goodness of my mind. Forces me to say terrible things. Overcoming anger brings peace of mind, a mind without regret. If I overcome anger, I will be delightful and loved by everyone.0 -

Forgive me for being a bit dim, (its my age you know), but I am going to Madeira in 10 days and have been reading Martins stuff about buying currency etc for overseas. Its got me terribly confused as this is the 1st time abroad in about 20 years and we always took Travellers cheques bought at the Travel Agents.
We have a Nationwide CC, a Tesco CC and an HSBC debit card, We would like to buy £350 worth of Euros to take with us ( I know its cheaper to spend on the NWide CC abroad, but hubby likes cash, hes a bit old fashioned). I always pay off the CC in full each month. With these loadings and interest etc ????? which is the best way to buy the Euros.0 -
In all honesty, you should just pay for as much as you can on the nationwide card, it will be the cheapest way. Watch out for shops trying to charge in sterling rather than euro, if they do this ask them to charge in euro on the machine (don't believe any rubbish about this not being possible)
For cash you won't have time to get a nationwide current account, personally I would just take it out of the hole in the wall using the debit card (1.75% fee, min £1.75 + 2.75% extra fee in the exchange rate). Take cash out in blocks of about €110 to minimise the fee. You could check martin's travel money maximiser but in my view for €350 it is less hassle to use the hole in the wall, any savings you might make would be insignificant. You might want to change a small amount of cash (say £30-50) before you go so that you've got some euros to hand when you arrive, although there is an ATM at the airport - see below.
Before you go on your next trip, apply for a Nationwide current account then you won't be charged anything to withdraw cash in Europe.

If you use ANY CC to get cash you will pay a cash advance fee AND interest from the day you get the money.
Use the CC to buy THINGS not money0 -
I have a fairfx.com card for euros and dollars. Load up before I go and it works a treat (mastercard chip and pin). They offer really good rates too - worth looking into.0

Nationwide will charge you nothing (currently) to use your debit card to get cash from an ATM or to pay with it in Madeira.
HSBC will charge you - without looking it up - at least 2.75%0
